|
|
Back in early june this year I recieved a lead on a 1950 beetle thru the grape vine. At first the project looked like a lot to take on for my restoration shop, which is currently full, but after a couple weeks of thought I ended up making a deal with its current owner.
After driving 2100 km and getting an enclosed trailer to keep prying eyes from seeing it, the car came home and now the work begins...
At the moment I am having difficulty reading the VIN number on the tunnel, since it is very faded on some numbers. Depending on how you intrepet it, it is either a December 1949 or August 1950 beetle. Does anyone have any suggestions for making that clearer to read before I pay for a birth certificate?
The Beetle in question is far from complete, all I have is the original Pan, body, doors and am missing everything else.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated! _________________ Christopher

The vin is stamped, so it shouldn't fade. But a trick I've used is to make an etching of the stamped vin with pencil and paper. Cleaning with wire wheel or brush is usually a good starting point also _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

I was worried that the wire wheel would be aggressive on the vin. Would Vinegar or Lemon juice work also the clean it up? _________________ Christopher

Let's see a picture or two of the tunnel around the ebrake/ shifter/heater/choke area. There are differences that could determine which it is.
Also the body number if it's a split body,
Also the frame number if you can see that.
The raised plate has the VIN and the other number is the frame number. |

well the body is august of 50.
so assuming they match (which they probably do) then august of 50 sounds about right.
pretty uncommon for a split to be swapped onto another split pan, obviously a very long time ago.
pan looks like 0189xxx? Both very late august of 50 _________________ drive your split. |

Agree, August 1950 for the pan and body. Definitely not a later 49 |

thanks Bwaz; Depending on how long it takes to find the parts will determine when it will be on the road again. _________________ Christopher

I did order the birth certificate last night, but on the website they said it could take as long as 5 months to receive it. Maybe by then it might roll? _________________ Christopher

When I emailed them directly before, they were able to give me the info on an email... once I had already paid, and the certificate would be coming... |

If you are looking for parts, i'd try online first. I don't know where the beetle was found but I drove to Alberta to pick it up. _________________ Christopher
