Not many Total Solar eclipses happen where one can easy venture to view them in one's lifetime upon this Earth.

But...... Come Mid August, 2017 we who reside in the lower 48 are all within a days journey (some a very long days journey) of experiencing one.

I remember one or two partials as a kid back before computers and our modern age.

Who's making plans?
Getting the old Westy ready to roll?
Making campground reservations?

Where are you heading in you Vanagon to see this event?

I may just hang out until 2024 and head to my favored New England instead of the hot Prairies or the deep South ....

I'll be in Bend the days preceding and driving out to the path of totality the night before.

In the Westy of course.

If you are doing anything in that area that requires reservations you will want to make them soon (like now).

Waiting until 2024 does not sound like a good idea for me.

Hoping to be in the high desert of eastern Oregon.

Expecting to be seeing lots of people out there.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave! We were supposed to go up to Olympic National Park this summer, but couldn't. This looks like a great opportunity to do both next summer! Cool

In the winter of 1979 I convinced my mother to visit friends in Brandon Manitoba
and to experience 2 minutes of totality...it was a great highlight of my then-young
life and I still remember it like I'm right there. Thanks, Mom!

Maybe I should invite her out to Nebraska and I'll drive this time...??? Wink

My plan would probably be to van camp within a couple hour drive, pop up in the
morning and get to a secluded back road site for the viewing. Much more advance
planning was required to be in a population center...I'd love to skip that hassle and
miss the crowds this time. Fun!

For you Oregon folks here is a map on this page showing the exact best latitude to stand on to get those extra 4 seconds of the eclipse.

http://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/best-places-to-view/

Just north of Madras looks good, but out further east at John Day Fossil Beds will get you all of 2.5 sec!

The site actually gives all the states. Out by Nashville, Tenn. they'll be getting 2 min 39 sec.

Maybe you'll stumble into my Brother out there. I'll find out where he's headed in his white Eurovan Weekender.

Haven't clue where I'll be! Hopefully out of work so I can have some time off to actually do something this summer/fall.

Not that long ago: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle1951/SE1979Feb26Tgoogle.html

I don't much care for her otherwise, but Annie Dillard's description of that event has always brought me to yearn for my own experience of such an eclipse.

we had people contact us LAST spring (2015) to make bookings for this. At this point we've got like five rentals lined up for this event.

Most all Germans, actually -- I've learned that they love the western USA due to travel documentaries. Germans love travel docs, apparently.

I think it's nuts (in a cool way, like how I think skydivers are nuts), but apparently it's a huge deal for some people.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seems like a great reason to make the pilgrimage to Carhenge...just outside of Alliance, NE and well within the path of totality...

Wow! I'm just inside the outer edge of the shadow as it passes thru St. Louis, MO. I'll have to organize a little Bus event to head out southwest of St. Louis to someone's farm or a park to campout and then view the total eclipse on the centerline of the path of the eclipse. I organize and host the BNNTA event ( www.bnnta.com ) the next month, so I should be able to come up with something fun...

Just bumping the thread back in consciousness for 2017 planning.

Here's a link to Solar Filters for a camera.
http://www.thousandoaksoptical.com/solar.html

Also "Eclipse Viewers"
http://www.thousandoaksoptical.com/ecplise.html

Ordering mine now to avoid the rush! The media I think is going to push this one as it gets nearer.

Here's a Google map of the path:
https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html
You can click along the path and get gps coordinates of the spot.

Reservations are already booked in most any town in the path of totality you have ever heard of.

My town, in Teton Valley Idaho, gets totally mobbed christmas to new years, they say we will have 3 times as many people here for the eclipse than we do for christmas, people are saying it's going to be a shit show...

There are no porta potties available for a 300 mile radius, they have all been reserve long ago. I've heard the forest service might close teton canyon, dispersed camping is legal there, but with so many people there are sure to be issues with human waste disposal...

Will surely set an attendance record for Yellowstone, and in August the attendance is already really high to the point that the facilities are somewhat overrun.

Yeah...not sure I want to be near any big town over then! Teton area would be wonderful, but like you say!

Oh...just checked Booking.com for fun. Teton Area Aug. 20 - 22. Two nights only one hotel, Best Western, showed up for $1,800.00 Shocked Shocked Shocked

This map Is zoomable and clickable, clicking on any location will tell you the exact time the eclipse will start there and how long it will be in totality. Looks like my house is 4 miles form the path of totality, the first lot we owned here 20 years ago looks like it's about 100 yards off the path.
