about a month ago i worked on the headlights. removed front grill etc.i noticed a few weeks ago, a low hum emanating from the front end, but only when i go over 40kph, it stays the same until i decelerate again. its acoustic quality is like the sounf of blowing over a bottle. its faint and obviously wind passing over something but what could this be from? i tried opening and closing the fresh air flaps, no change. _________________ '88Doka JX td

My Jetta did that... until I added a fairing to the front Yakima crossbar. _________________ ~Kamz

I recall the A-pillars being open to the ground and causing this hum. There's a sponge like material in some vans (later years) that was supposed to eliminate this hum.
An old post...

I haven't tried what is shown in this German link, but it looks interesting - blocking A pillar opening at bottom, under van.

Yes I plugged my A pillars from underneath, road noise would apparently travel up like a church organ (as opposed to the woodwind section).
I think I read somewhere that the upmarket Caravelle's were plugged at the VW factory but lesser vans missed out. |

I think your van has become a pied piper of sorts. Have you noticed any animal or insect migrations in your mirrors? _________________ Sabata

My bet is the roof rack too. I built a sweet full roof rack for my old 74 bay and it howled. It started out low and by the time i hit 35 to 40 it howled with pretty good resonance. People a block further up the road could hear me coming. A heat gun and some 1/8th inch acrylic to make a nice visor, problem solved. |

If it only happens above 120bpm, I'd say it's prolly just some air bleeding off your weidoeft resonator.
