OK so here’s the deal. Some of you may be familiar with the crew cab I am restoring, chronicled here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=336490

I have been “working” on this for 10 years. I put "working" in quotes because some years I have been motivated and other years I just moved it out of storage for the summer, fixed a few things, and moved it back.

Well, now I have a deadline. My son is getting married August 27th and I promised him at the beginning of the summer I would drive the wedding party from the church to the reception in the bus. Once we get to the reception, the back bed will be set up as the bar. With that date rapidly approaching, I am starting to panic… not because I am not up to doing the work but because every time I run into something I can’t figure out it stops all forward progress.

Here’s where the “help” part comes in, if you are willing to play along for a good cause. Every time I post a problem that a Samba member has a solution for, I am going to donate $10 to TheSamba.com. If I make it to the wedding, I’ll throw in another $100. Since I’m way over budget already I need to put a reasonable cap on this so let’s say $250. That’s 15 solutions and a wedding. I’ll even have Everett chime in when we are done to verify that I am a man of my word.

I am going to post my issues separately so they will be searchable going forward. Please watch for posts from 70Crew and respond if you think you can help. Want to start right away? Here’s an open question:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=660346

And thanks for considering my plight.

Chris

Thanks.... and believe me, I wish I had good local resources, but West Michigan isn't a hotbed of bus activity.

I guess technically I don't have that much left to do. Yes , it runs and drives. The interior is essentially done. I just need to finish assembling the front doors and then install the doors, side windows, windshield (someone else will be doing this), seat belts and front bumper. The problem is, I am putting "doing it right" ahead of "getting it done".

As an example, I thought I had the headlight flashers fixed after tracking down a separated ground connector. I went to put the dash top on yesterday and did a quick check. Sure enough, they had stopped working again. I retested the relay (good) and then started tracing wires. I pulled the turn signal switch and found that the internal ground wire connection had separated. I re-soldered that and reassembled it. Just that troubleshooting and repair set me back at least an hour, probably more. You'd be surprised how many of those situations you run into when everything is 45 years old. Thankfully I have a good stash of parts I can draw from if anything is broken.

Based on the threads I have read on the doors and side windows, I am guessing I will have several opportunities to ask for help. As long as I get quick responses, I can keep the forward momentum going and should have a fighting chance of hitting my deadline. Hence the bribe. Smile.

But why not keep all of your questions and answers in one thread? Doesn't make much sense to have 200 different threads going for each question you have on the Bus....if I were closer dude I'd be right there to give you a hand.

I didn't notice your location until now. There are actually quite a few bay window folks around town (six bays in my family). PM me your phone number, I'd love to at least provide moral support, I'm putting glass in my '77 right now. I did wedding rescue back up duty when the primary bus couldn't finish delivering the Bride and Groom to the reception. Guests couldn't figure out how the B&G left the church in a tan Westy and showed up in a green one. Laughing

I'd offer to help if I wasn't so busy at work right now..

I was going to say don't rush it - it would be too bad to spend 10 years on a restoration and then hurry the last details. But I appreciate a deadline, and it does help motivate.

Good luck!

If it comes down to finishing or doing it right, I won't be finishing. However, I'm prepared to cut a few work days if necessary.

I thought the same thing initially. However, not sure about everyone else but when I do a search before posting questions I limit the search to titles only. Otherwise there is too much to sort through. If I use one thread and solve several problems that others might find useful in the future, a typical search wouldn't turn up those solutions. It seems like keeping them separate is the best approach - does that make sense?

I kind of go back and forth on this issue too.

Sometimes I will post questions in my build thread(s) and I doubt as many people see them. So other times I'll make my own specific thread with the thought of others seeing it as well as making it more searchable.

I do try to link the two threads together, though. IE, if I post a specific question thread, I'll put the link to it in my build thread.

Being a man who is true to my word, I am donating $110 to Everett & TheSamba.com - $100 for making the wedding and $10 for problem-solving.

This is very cool. We used the bed of my old 59 single cab as the serving buffet for our groom's dinner of fresh Alaska salmon. Good times. Just celebrated our 16th anniversary a few days ago.

Congrats to the newly wedded couple.
