So less than 2 weeks after the thread in which I wondered if a Westy was right for my wife and I, we bought one. And oh what an amazing rig it is: a 1982 diesel in incredibly good condition mechanically and cosmetically. We drove it back home ~275mi and camped on the way. I think it's safe to say we're in love. I'm writing up the story and will post it, but I have a quick question.
The FAQ has already answered 1.5 zillion questions I've come up with in the last 3 days (really, I am not the only one without the key to his van's shore water?!), but I am stumped by this one. My van's POs were saints, but one of them removed the tie down points in the cargon hold on the roof, and they were not in the box of parts I got with the van. Are these available somewhere (ha)? Does anyone have an ingenious replacement for them? I'd love to toss my water line, power cord, and outside-the-door mat up there but I need a net to cover them and that net needs to be anchored to something. |

Footman loops they call them.
Odds are yours simply rusted off..... They do that! Mine fell off as I touched them.
The factory design limits what you can use for binding loads, specifically to luggage straps or bungees with thin metal hooks.
Converting to a marine rope loop opens the World to rope and other binding options.
Mount them with stainless hardware with a large washer backing it up inside the rack.
Two types.......
From this thread....

Hi,
yup, no primer. I power washed and sanded the top last fall. Was in the garage all winter. Before painting I filled in a couple of holes (long story) and a couple of deep scratches with some thickened epoxy. Those repairs were sanded fair, then I used a green scotchbrite pad on top, blew off the dust, then wiped down with a thinner soaked rag.
I put some stainless eye straps, 2″ Harken, on the luggage rack yesterday. I've been using them for a few years, I like them better than the stock footman's loop.

While I was at West Marine I made a point of looking for new Stainless Steel Footman Loops. Mine are horribly rusty and a few were missing.
They hadn't any in the size I needed but they did have Stainless Steel Strap Loops which are larger and would allow one to use rope instead of only thin webbing straps.
They were only $3 each so I picked them up.
Here is the receipt with the loop part numbers on it if anyone wants to order them online......

Fantastic! I got a conclusive answer to my question AND I learned something. I have been around lots of boats but I'd never learned the name of them. Looks like you can get nice ones on Amazon (so I don't have to drive across the city to a boat shop).
I'm at work so I don't have my van handy to go look, so: how does one get behind the holes for the nut? Do you have to remove the whole piece to install these?
If it's a non involved process, I may order a set of them and install them before my camping trip this weekend. |

You remove the screws holding it on, Two on the front, one on each side, then open the pop top and you'll see four ? More.
Then lift the fiberglass up and off.
You'll find mounds of rotten leaves, bees nests, sticks, etc.
Hopefully no live bees ...... but that's aways a possibility.
Put on your new loops and reinstall the top.
While off it is a good idea to clean and wax that area under the luggage rack.

Thanks again Dave. Maybe I'll bring the loops and do it while at the campsite.

You'll find some information on removing/replacing your old footman's loops/cleats, and some other roof-related maintenance, here:

Uh-oh, tinkering on the van while camping? Sounds like another one has joined the club

Welcome! |
Thanks much! And yes, a string of small van improvement projects sounds like an ideal way to spend a couple days around camp. All the better with a beer or two. If there is a club for that, I am a prime candidate |

Has anybody been able to find a current part number for the West Marine eye strap shown above? I haven't been able to get a hit on the part numbers shown on the tag or receipt. The closest I found at westmarine.com is part number 261388, but the mounting holes are too close together (1-5/8" vs the 2-1/8" we need). |

Thanks for the link Steve, but I would prefer to replace with a pad eye fitting that will more easily accommodate the hooks on bungee cords and ratchet straps. |

I tend to bring parts, even big ones, and then somehow not find the time, and then I put them all back in the van for the trip home. This also includes bicycle tires - knobbies vs. street tread, for example. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

I do not recommend the Marine rope tie-downs. I installed them a few years ago. They stand higher than the lip of the cargo bin and have an aeodynamic effect which causes the entire cargo bin to vibrate violently. I replaced them with stock stainless footman's loops.

I ended up going with these:
Stainless Steel Oblong Pad Eye Straps Wire Plate Bimini Staple Ring 8mm
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BIA6428?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
The spacing between the bolt holes was too narrow, so I reshaped them in a vice. I'm very happy with end result. I only have one trip with them installed, but didn't notice any vibration or wind noise.

Perhaps a bit premature to post another update, but I just wrapped up a 900 mile road trip and these things are awesome. Super easy to use bungee cords and straps to secure my camp table, chairs, firewood, etc, to the luggage rack.
The link I provided above is still active and eight of these cost less than $16. Compare that to $52 for the original style cleats at GoWesty. Not knocking GoWesty, I love our vendors, but this is a no-brainer! |
