OMG Sad

So glad you're both alright. I've often thought about how emotionally distressed I'd be if this ever happened to my bug but mine is nowhere NEAR as precious and important as your split is. Wow. I'm pretty sure I'd be a famous Youtube video of ".....the guy crying on the side of the road uncontrollably....." Haha

I hope the insurance company finds a proper body shop to do the repair professionally and correctly for you.

Again, glad you're alright.

ALLWAGENS New2Me Ryan65 Jason Wrenn; thank you all for the well wishes. I'm hoping the repair portion of this story will start soon.

Work has begun. Cut the apron off at the spot welds, as well as removing all other rear sheet metal. Had to do a few things to the engine......the trans unfortunately will need to be gone thru again, it’s making some really nasty noise.

Glad to see you begin work on this!! I had no idea of your accident when I saw you at the Yakima show Sat evening. This is Scott with the Glauser bus...
I'm positive that you will be able to resurrect your beetle to be better than ever!! Most of all, so glad that you, your wife, and everybody else involved walked away from that! It could of been much, much worse from seeing the pictures!

Thanks John, i feel a lot better also. Getting the ugly bent stuff off the car leaves a much better impression. I'm feeling like its very repairable.

Thanks also Scott! Love your bus, lets do some more road trips and Durability Drive next summer

That sounds great to me Patrick! I'm already looking forward to next year's shows and cruises. The Seattle Vintage weekend is always my favorite, I will be doing the Durability cruise with you guys this year for sure. But....I don't have anything ready to go for the 25/36hp challenge. So I'll have to bring up the rear in a Non-qualifying vehicle. Sad
Take your time on the Split! What else do you have in the wings to drive while you're repairing the 52'?

I’m not sure there will be a challenge next year, but the DurabilityDrive is definitely a go.....I have a vehicle up my sleeve, but it’s not a Beetle. Big plans! Don’t tell anyone Shhh Shhh Shhh Shhh

Hi Patrick,

Did the insurance company write it off and you ended up buying it back? Or are they going to pay to restore to original?

Look forward to seeing it on the road again.

Damage was well below the threshold to total the car, no pan damage either

That's good to hear! I was afraid that the engine frame horns would have some kick-up in it that would need to get pulled out. The Pass fender (going from memory, haven't seen the pics in awhile) took a beating! How was the quarter in that area? I imagine it just ripped the hell out of all the fender bolt encapsulated nuts?
I'd take a good hard look at the seat track welds on the pan if your seats got beat up that bad too! Damn, I just can't believe that little beetle kept you two relatively safe in that accident. That was a hard hit!

I may have suggested it before, but make sure you check the oil cooler. Rear end collisions often break off the mounting ears.

Some, but not tons. I do have some pics and a video which I'll post up. The accident was one year ago as of September 14th.

... back in '75, I was on a dangerous highway, called 9W in NJ, traveling up a hill in my '57 bug and I saw something red flash up in the sky, in front of me and had no idea what it could have been and disregarded it... got to the crest if the hill, doing about 60 mph and right there, in front of me, in my lane was a careening out of control 18 wheeler rig... my reaction was to hit the brake and make a hard right - that's what I did and my left front hit the big-rig's right front...

... in a moment, all the dust settled all was dead silent - all time paused and all was still and silent... we both came to a halt - I looked down the hill and saw a red sedan all broken up and in flames - the flying front hood was the red, flash in the sky, I saw moments before.

I broke my thumb, I found out at the hospital...

...my bug was totaled/ the left flattened and the trucking company took care of everything.

You my friend are a mighty lucky man.... glad your car will be repaired

Bought a 1950 11G shortly afterwards Smile
