Thanks guys. The VW world is more about love and passion than any car community I know of.
Changed the oil and torqued the heads before putting the engine back in.
😢I found this in the oil sump.😥I thought I might freshen the engine over the winter, now that decision is 100%. The engine will go back in the car for now to enjoy a little more before being shelved for the winter.

Ouch! Not sure I would keep driving it like that. If the pin starts to slide out the side and dig into the cylinder wall, you'll have bigger issues. |

If that clip somehow made it out between the piston and cylinder you already have giant issues, hopefully it was just lost in the case during the last overhaul. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Well, got the engine back and thought this would be fun. Will be pulling it back out in a few weeks when the winter comes to give it appropriate love.

Totally correct guys! After driving 3k plus km in the last 6 weeks though I decided to take my chances. Just a couple more nice days to do some short trips around town. If there is damage, its already done. I'm not quite ready for the summer to be over.
In November, down for the winter, the engine came out and apart.
Hopefully this is the last time that 54-55 air cleaner is on this motor
Good news first, no wrist pin clips were missing. That one must of been a left over from the last time the engine was open. Some evidence of backyard mechanic monkey business was found though
#3 looks like it's been hot
Thats a lot of permatex, this motor looks like it's been open since this car has been in the USA.
One of the cylinders was cracked and repaired
These are ground down plug welds on the outside of the cylinder base
These are the plug welds visible on the inside of the welded cylinder
The engine was making metal when I got it, and has been pretty consistently showing signs of something amiss internally though the metal amount had been lessening. The wrist pin clip was the final straw that motor needed to come apart. Once apart the engine was in good shape except the Pistons and cylinders. Very clean inside and very little wear except the obvious stuff shown above.
What do you guys think? _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

Just when I think I have seen it all...
Since this thing has been grinding away I would highly recommend having the oil galley plugs removed and tapped for tapered screw in plugs so you can thoroughly cleans all of the galleys with a riffle cleaning brush. _________________ Chris

New Pistons and cylinders were sourced. I didn't pull the galley plugs, but things were thoroughly cleaned. _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

Still haven't acquired a correct manifold, this is my attempt at making a look alike. Using a 36hp manifold, the jacket off another 36hp, metric steel tubing and some epoxy.

Hopefully we will meet again this summer Russ.
Got lucky and found a coffee can. This is the inside, and pliers modified for opening the ends of the can.
Before and after on the right, some intermediate steps on the left
A couple more shots once completed
I haven't had luck acquiring an original paint air cleaner, so I decided to fake it with this one. Intentionally left a dusting of surface rust for an authentic look after paint and distressing. Really happy with how it came out. _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

Awesome car.
How do you distress the paint to make this very authentic patina?

It's a simple process
1. thin coat for coverage with non catalyzed semi-gloss paint using a touchup gun
2. Sanded/distressed the look semi-aggressively with very fine steel wool
3. Very light coat of selected distressed areas with another layer of paint for mottled appearance
4. Very lightly and selectively dress areas with very fine steel wool for final look
5. Hand polish with rubbing compound _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

I'd like to know what you coated the manifold with. I like the look. Looks somewhat broken in. |

Do you mean the air cleaner? I painted that with Rustoleum, thinned for gun spraying with mineral spirits. The intake manifold was sprayed with cast iron gray high temp paint _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint
