Hey guys,

I might have bitten off more than I can chew on this project. My kubel's chassi spent a couple years outside exposed. A hole rusted in the bottom tunnel cover. Over the years this allowed water and rust to destroy the cable guides and fuel line. i am looking for someone that can replace these 12mm and 8 mm tubes. Any ideas?

Also there is rust inside the fork that mounts the engine. Are there any options for getting at this? Acid dipping perhaps?

I suspect that this chassis has spent more than 'a couple of years' outside. Looking at the chassis backbone, especially where the floorpans attach, the metalwork is mighty pock marked & remarkably thin in places. Is this project viable?

I would use some phosphoric acid to neutralize the rust that you can't see. I've been using it in many "blind" areas for a few years and have been very happy with the results. As for the tube, I replaced all of the cable guide tubes on a split bus last year, and Wolfsburg west carries lengths of the different diameters. Proper tube length, bracing, and securing the ends is critical.
Best of luck.. SD

My 1945 Kübel got the same treatment:

Yea. Kind of a big job. Hardest part is finding the right tubing though. There’s a place in Toledo that has it in 20’ sticks. But you have to get them in person to get them long enough to not be splicing.

Just like everything else it’s pretty satisfying when it’s done. I’d probably do it again.
