Hi folks.
I didn't get any search hits for "SME ...." so here I am.
For a 1988 Canadian market Westfalia.
Mainly a point of curiosity but is this an original fan motor?
There were no clips, box tabs were still "welded" so I bet the box has never been opened. The foam at core looks factory but then this is only my second water cooled box foray. Foam at flaps looks ok and might be original.
You can almost see the amount of play at shaft end. It was getting pretty loud.
Area below resistor suffered heat damage.

Looks original to me.
Don't forget to put an oiler tube to the left heater blower motor bearing after you have fixed it.

The date code 2387 on it indicates week 23, year 87
That fits for an early 88 model van.

Thanks Duncan and Mark. Mark: I was curious of those white numbers. Thanks.
This type of info has likely been documented but "confirmation" that these parts are likely original and untouched made posting pics etc. worthwhile.
All flap foam is "ok" and sealed "ok". Heat damage from resistor (heat from bracket) may indicate fan was on "all the time" at low speed. It was quite noisy but still worked.
Seeing that the factory secured box halves with "welds" but no clips or sealant, was enlightening.
One steering column OE bolt present, one box bracket bolt was loose, driver side upper screw at box tough to remove. Fan job aborted by PO?
Clamps look OE but of course are re usable.
"worst" looking fresh air ram flap foam. edit: foam at other flaps in similar or better condition
Interesting to see strap at cable. Though no hole was present at that brace, that's where I secured a similar location strap on the 3 lever box in my '81 former air cooled
Screw hole corrosion isn't bad but screw felt like it might snap. My Kroil stopped spraying so I had to dribble that into a copper tube then onto screw area. Good times.
driver side upper box screw and hole
Visible corrosion at one resistor terminal. Resistor still works.

All things considered, some of the original flap foam is in decent condition. I don't know if difference in foam colour is due to material type or difference in temperatures they're exposed to.
Foam on flaps that control air to body ducts to rear is in better condition. They don't see as much heat? The plastic part flaps mount to was "welded" to the box. A minor PITA to remove. I cut several tabs to do so. That part and box have screw holes, one screw was present. The air cooled and 3 lever WBX boxes I've opened had that part screwed in place.
There is (was) foam at this edge of flap. It likely reduces noise of flap hitting box. I see "87" year date.
