Why are you concerned about the weight of the winch? IMO they don’t weigh much and having one is better then not having one. As stated above, install it behind the bumper, cut a hole in the bumper and run the cable through. Seen it done, there is a guy in Cortez who has with this set up. Clean and reliable. |
The one we have is pretty heavy, I think it was the heaviest thing in our bus. That's probably due to the cable, which I might replace. Mounting behind the bumper out of sight would be very cool. Seen it done on many an overlander but not a bus. is there space for a winch behind the front bumper?
Xevin I'm hoping I don't need to use the winch that often and you are right I made it all that way and probably only needed it 5 times in 5 years, and I always found a way out without it...eventually _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

An alternative to have a winch on the front of your vehicle. Lighter, simpler, and much cheaper. Just throwing it out there. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Assume that almost everything hanging outside the bus will eventually be stolen. Take what you can carry inside or afford to lose by theft (hoping to use at some point before being stolen). Anything fluorescent will attract more unwanted attention. |

Ben, Just a tip when driving on soft ground off road. Modern off road guys will often drop tire pressure to 15 PSI. Not sure what appropriate PSI deflation would be for a bus. I’ve only had to drop it to 20psi. That’s when the little air compressor comes in handy. Plus should you get multiple tires with leaks. Or get a flat tire in a spot to soft to jack up bus. You would have air on demand to possibly help you get out of there. Just a thought. _________________ Keep on Busin'

I air down to about 22 psi on dirt roads and wash board, lower for sand or off road conditions in a 4x4 vehicle. In the winter I run studded tires and 30 psi. If I am still slipping around or it is especially sketchy, I will go down to the mid 20's. Lower tire pressure equals larger tire contact patch for traction. Tire deflators are an easy and accurate way to deflate. Terrawagen sells them.
https://www.terrawagen.com/products/terrawagen-ez-deflator
Also I carry a plug kit it the car, they are pretty cheap and I have one in each car. For a Bus tire, you can pump it back up with a bicycle pump. Good exercise too. _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

yep I have an onboard compressor for that purpose waiting to be installed. It's a good suggestion.
I also would like to purchase one of those deflators as shown in that video (thanks for posting that), but to be honest that one looks a little clumsy. I've have nothing to compare it to though...EDIT - a quick search showed that was pretty typical.l? It would be good to be able to connect the compressor to the same device so you can have the same benefit of the gauge when airing up too

Not sure it would be practical for your trip with charging batteries and such (unless maybe you had other tools that used the batteries and bought the car charger), but I have a Ryobi tire inflater that you hook up the pump to the tire, then set the desired PSI and it turns off when it hits that.
Or hopefully it gives you an idea of something similar to find.

Well, you can put them on the wheel that doesn't have traction. Or you can ride the brake a little bit to push power to both wheels. I get it, its not a high dollar setup that can handle any situation. That being said, its a pretty simple and reliable setup. |

I think you're looking for something like this.

As to your winch question... I think this is your winner.

How about a good $50 come-along, a mess of straps, and 4 foot section of heavy rebar as a dead man. Mechanical systems don't rely on running engines and operating electrical systems. A section of chain with 2 binders ( to "walk the dog" ), just in case your hopelessly stuck. Plus nobody is likely to steal it. |
simple, compact, multi use
isn't that some sort of overlander trifecta?
There are also winch mounts that go into hitch receivers. Then you could store it on top if you wanted it out of the way/sight when not in use. Metal cables are also very heavy. If you don't need the larger load rating, go to a kevlar cord instead. _________________ ~Kevin

I should have got you some "draw tape" when you were here- It's used by the power company to feed big wire thru conduit and can handle 1800 #-- also its soaked in silicone oil - so it will slide easily- Usually comes in big length -very compact- good for tying down tarps and shades- you do need to knot the ends or they pull thru any knot. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Ben
I just got an 1970 Adventurecamper not too long ago and I love your videos, thank you for making them! As far as getting unstuck, have you ever seen these things? Lightweight, probably won't get stolen, pretty cheap. I'll try and put a link here...

Good luck and can't wait to see the next series! _________________ =================================

That looks like a lightweight solution and the video is promising. But 30% 1 star reviews on Amazon doesn't tell a good story
Speaking of good stories. We've been working hard at documenting the whole process of finding and building our bus for our new series.
I think I will post it in a different dedicated thread so people can enjoy the series.
Here is a little tease from one of the scenes that we filmed during the search:

If you haven't watched our previous series I just put together a mini series of 3 short videos which will allow you to catch up about 6 years of the story so far.

Forget Kevlar rope, it's a bit 80's now, it snaps without warning and doesn't like to be bent and needs an outer cover on it, go for bare Dyneema, the UV and wear rating has improved over the years, it's very light and very easy to splice, can also put a wear jacket on the main wear points to make it last even longer. |
