Even though I’ve had my bus for 5 years, I’m still learning new things.
Yesterday I was doing some work and had my type 4 engine running. I reached under the bus and unexpectedly felt air flowing under the fan shroud. I began to wonder - is this normal behavior or do I have a leak somewhere? The airflow pattern was in a constant line between the fan shroud the the muffler heat shield so I assume this may be normal behavior - but like I said, I’m still learning new things.
Do I have an air leak?
Thanks,

on a type IV engine, warm air comes out from the tin sleds after blowing across the cylinders and oil cooler. On a upright with doghouse, part of the air blows out the front of the engine and some out of the sled tin. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Good Morning and I think it’s normal even with all sheet metal in place
But I am now curious and probably will go out and lay on the garage floor

You can light certain herbs for a visual airflow test, or use the “table-tennis ball in tin foil” trick to create your own smoke tester. The fan shroud has some drain provision, I think, and a little leak there isn’t going to matter much in the grand scheme of things.
I personally employ the heat cast-off to warm my toes when I find myself wearing flip flops in a snowstorm...

The hot air exhaust off the heads and cylinders comes out right in front of and below the fan shroud as does the hot air off the oil cooler. |
