Shift plate comparison... stock on bottom, replacement on top of unknown origin.
When my shifter felt funny I bought both the plastic bushing and also a spare shift plate, just in case. The bushing cleaned up the sloppy shifting perfectly, so I re-used my old, unworn shift plate ( '71 Fastback).
But it was interesting how different the working surfaces are. I know the bottom is original. The top is probably not repro; it looks to be the same metal and is obviously taken off a car, so I know it was working.
I haven't quite wrapped my head around just how the two vertical surfaces interact with the shifter handle assembly to control reverse lockout. And so I can' tell what difference the narrower wear surfaces would affect shifting.
Anyone know if this matters, or if this is from a different model or year?

Off the top of my head or the bottom of my ass (take your pick) I'm calling the top one as Bay Bus.
IIRC they have a narrower pattern due to the longer shifter but don't quote me. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Looking in the Type 3 Parts Book, I find the following:
311 711 149 up to VIN 310 2 500 000 (end of MY 1970.)
111 711 149 A 311 2 000 001 to 311 2 500 000 (another one year only '71 part!)
111 711 149 B 312 2 000 001 - on
These numbers would seem to indicate that there was also a 111 711 149 part used on early Beetles, making for a total of at least 4 different versions. Likely more once we include Type 2s and 4s. _________________ Jim Adney

Bay Windows have 2 plates sticking out of the sides.

I was not aware the 1970 and earlier Type 3 used a different plate than the regular Beetle one, I wonder what is different. Maybe it's the difference in the photos above or maybe that's just a crappy reproduction part.
The normal difference I think of is the early Beetle/Bus plate having one or 2 guide pieces on the sides.
Example, earlier style is on the right side:
They are interchangeable though, it was an improvement _________________ How to Post Photos
