|
|
Hi friends. Years ago my Syncro-specific oil filler tube separated between the plastic and steel portions. I'd buy a new one if they were available, but it appears they are not.
I originally "repaired" with some glue and put a plastic sheath around the outside and secured it with hose clamps. It worked for a number of years, but now that my engine is out, I want to make a better, more permanent repair.
Has anyone done this with a method they's recommend?

Would apprectiate the guidance of someone who's had success here. I'm considering JB Weld, but ???

If you decide to glue it, Automotive Goop adhesive will hold up much better long-term than JB Weld. |

Thanks!
Just looked up Automotive Goop. Label says
"...fully cured adhesive can withstand temperatures from -40 to 180F intermittently."
Seems the temperature here on a running engine might be near the upper range of this routinely. Guessing 150-170F - ish? Don't know how the Goop would handle that on a long-term basis.

I've used it in specifically on the oil filler tube without issue. It is both very strong and at the same time more flexible than JB Weld when cured. It withstands oil and fuel. If you do use it, then clean the surfaces with brake clean, smear on both parts, then assemble and remove the excess. Obviously nothing to me if you decide to use something else, though. Report back the results of whatever you decide to use, in order to expand the tribal knowledge. |

industrial heat shrink material would be a nice follow up to fully seal that joint after gluing. The stuff I use is really thick and adds structure to a juncture like that. _________________ Casey--

I think I used RTV silicone, then self amalgamating tape and then a hose clamp, just for good measure. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

I bicycle inner tube might make a nice boot once you secure it. I've got a small bag of Type 3 oil fill boots. Wonder if one could be adapted?

How is this part any different? I am using the 2wd oil filler tube. _________________ '87 Syncro

i repaired my drippy wobbly fill tube with copious amounts of The Right Stuff gasket maker. it cures harder than typical RTVs yet has more resiliency than an epoxy. hose clamps for tightness and support, as you did. clean everything crazy well before attempting. _________________ -dan

The syncro filler tube is longer to compensate for the taller mustache bar, so that it will end up in the same place as 2wd behind the license plate door. the syncro dip stick and dip stick tube are also longer than 2wd. afaik. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

Makes sense. My 2wd dipstick is a pain to access. I use a funnel to add oil anyway so I don't think there is any change there. _________________ '87 Syncro

My first choice would be ABS bumper repair epoxy, available in different brands. It cures to a hard rubber consistency, allowing some play / movement / thermal expansion. I've used this successfully to repair a hole in a Syncro tank - approx 10 years and holding without any seeping whatsoever.
With any such repairs, surface prep is key - has to be absolutely 'dry' of any oil, and roughed to probably a 60 grit or coarser.
The idea of using self-vulcanizing tape isn't bad at all, though I know it holds up to coolant, I don't know about oil. Once again, surface prep is key.

Exactly. It`s called adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing, the size you need is 40mm ( 1.5").
Works like a charm. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.
