|
|
Hi. Never done this on a Vanagon before (only used to the split windows when it comes to removing engine/transaxle).
If I were to start pulling the engine and transmission from my 1988 Vanagon, will it still roll and be stable? Can it be towed?
If so, what is the recommended piece to remove first - engine or transmission?
Both are in need of work - swap out - so just thinking of getting a head start. Get the undercarriage all cleaned up before the new stuff goes back in.
Something that could be done in the driveway?
Thanks tons!

Yes it will still roll.
it is easiest to remove them together as a single unit..
there are a couple ways to do it. but many many have done it in a driveway..
a good piece of cardboard or better is plywood to lay and roll it out on.
invest in magnetic parts bowls and learn to properly label parts and fasteners _________________

if you want to tow it after removal, you will need to remove the axles entirely. not difficult as long as you have the correct bit for the cv bolts (and clean the bolts to avoid stripping). not a bad idea to clean and repack the cv joints while doing this job. _________________ 84 Vanagon Westy, 1.9L, California raised but defected to Canada. |

Buy yourself both the torx bit and hex bit as sometimes you may find both types of bolts on the axles. I forget the size, but as soon as I see it in my tool box I'd know it! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Not Torx but “triple square”, also called XZN:

You would be wise to buy the set of 24 bolts to upgrade your axles.
I’ve rolled the van with the transmission out by hoop-wiring up the axles to the springs. No need to remove the bolts inside the hubs.
In any case, its the ideal time to get them out and upgrade your bolts. Soak them good for a few days ahead of time with PBBlaster. Use a sharp tool to pick out any dirt inside the allen sockets. Don’t hesitate to pound liberally to seat your allen tool and also while loosening them.
Once that job is done you can exhale. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

It's possible that there are hex bolts instead of the OEM triplesquare. Triplesquare is really strong, if you clean out the heads, it won't strip like hex/allen can.
GoWesty has the short XZN. I don't know why.
I'd recommend the extended XZN unit. The fat part of the short triplequare fights with the CV boots and it's pretty hard to keep it engaged. Heres the long XZN, it's much easier to use on a Vanagon
slightly more expensive, $8 on Amazon: https://amzn.com/B00NH5DKJ8

Yes do this - PPBlaster soaking, even a few hours is kind of amazing. But if no time to soak, knock the bolt head sideways left&right with a small hammer will break the head loose too. _________________

I have found it easier to rotate the rear wheel into different positions to get better access to some of the CV bolts with a socket. _________________ John.
