Hello VW enthusiasts, I have chosen today to present you my “Kombinationsfahrzeug”, which is completing 65 years old! Yes, it's a Barndoor, and it was built on September 7, 1951.

I have spent the last years studying each detail of this project, each screw, each tiny item... and mostly, digging “BD parts” around the globe. Since then I have made great friends in Germany, US, Japan, Denmark, England, and of course here in Brazil.

My main goal is making an original factory condition restoration, within what's possible for someone who lives far away from the countries where you can still find Barndoor parts. Here in Brazil not many barndoors survived. According to my estimates, we have something around 11 units only.

A quite challenging step was finding the right professional to restore the bodywork because it required plenty of work. Besides that, I planned to preserve as much the original German metal as possible. I got lucky, and beyond finding an excellent professional – a real artist – I have made a good friend.

A bit more than 1 year ago my Barndoor arrived at my home, after the bodywork and the painting job have been done. Since then the assembly is under my own responsibility, during my free time. No hurry, enjoying every little part I put on it.

An interesting detail about my Barndoor is that it is a Type 24A, Microbus with sunroof and upholstery/interior panels of the deluxe model. It came from factory with a rare “optional item“, quite interesting, M 054 Full width dashboard – as the Samba model. Birth certificate says: "Lockable glove box lid" Smile

To find the original color, after a long work scraping and removing old paint layers, I came to the following conclusion: at the line of the windows, L22 (Medium Grey) and below the belt line, L23 (Silver Grey). The roof was the hardest part, and I am still not 100% sure because I found traces of both gray and white. After some research I decided to paint it L82 (Silver White). Since the roof is a relatively small area, I can fix it later if I think it is necessary.

Over time I will share more photos and reports.

Greetings from Brazil!

Wow! It is very exciting to see a Sunroof Bus that is so early.

M-code 54 is:
Full width dashboard (until March '55)

I see you have this option - very cool!

M54 - Lockable glove box lid is for a Bay Window Bus.
I don't know why the VW birth certificate always make strange mistakes like this.

Hi Ian! "Mar 51" is the date stamped on the wheels, and the bus is from September.

About "sunroof option", or "sliding roof", unless I am mistaken, the first mention in the Progressive Refinements book is:

This reference book covers type1/2/3 VW's from 1940 until December of 1961 (vol 1).
The book's pages have tables of information that show the incremental changes put in place by Volkswagen during production.
