Hey guys,
I've researched this, but I can't seem to find a photo that shows me exactly where to look for rust in the Hell Hole and the Longitudinals (sp?) on a Porsche 914. I've found pictures showing these areas without rust, so I don't know where to look. And I know the hell hole is under the battery, but all the photos seem to have the batteries removed. See my dilemma?
So maybe I'm going about this all wrong. Does anyone have a picture of a badly rusted out Hellhole and Longitudinal on a 914? Or borderline rusty? Then I'd know what to avoid when I'm shopping around.
Thanks for any help,

You are the Jedi Master of Google. Thanks for the link. So apparently the Hell Hole runs parallel to the rear axle and can be accessed by removing some kind of body panel.
Reading that tech article, the guy went deep into it to fix the problems. I wonder if you could just reinforce it by adding extra metal? I guess the other question I have is whether you could improve on the design, like to use bar stock instead of something hollow? But I can understand avoiding the rust is the best solution.
Thanks,

The hellhole is just the common name for the lower part of the area under the battery. Rain and leaky batteries in combination with poor drainage from this area causes 914's to rust, once the rust goes thru the upper layer it spreads into the lower sections and the longs.
In the image above the hell hole is the recessed darker area left of the center of the image. |

the battery tray area is very prone to leaks, the acid get washed down by rain, etc |

Always a good idea to remove 914 top and open both doors at same time. Run away if you can no longer shift vehicle or close the doors!. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |
