|
|
I might as well come clean on my new project, a 1960 SO23 Westy.
Right now I am just collecting the parts that I know it is missing, and plans are to make it a solid driver, but not to go crazy with it like I did with my 58 15 window. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=257371
Originally, I was thinking of a 1500, but I am such a stock guy that I decided to go with a 40HP engine, but with a big bore kit for a little more torque to push around all that wood.
Here are a few pix:
If anyone is sitting on SO23 parts, please PM me.
I am looking for:
All curtain rods
The tall wardrobe cabinet
The water tank, filler tube, pump, sprinkler head
Metal headliner strips
Cargo net
Rear marble mat
Cover for Emka cups
And probably a whole slew of little stuff that I don't know about yet
Anyway, like I said, I want to tighten up the body and make a great driver.
Progress will be slow for a while, so just sit tight while parts are being collected.

Im with Crofty on the parts thing.....that early Westy stuff is tough to find and some of it you need to sell your first born to be able to fund it....that's if you find it.
Find it, step up, cry later.......
And high hinge as well, whats the M plate saying?
Looking forward to watching this one Neil and welcome to Westy World. |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.
This is my first foray into a "coach built" bus, and if I can't find all the parts, I might just restore it back to a kombi...
Most of the SO23 pix I have seen, show wood panels in the cab area.
This bus has the grey hardboard headliner panels, which I like better.
What is supposed to be "correct"?
I like the grey because it seems to brighten up the driver compartment.
Parts hunting will be a bit difficult because I live 3000 miles from the bus, and haven't even seen it in person yet, but I like a challenge. |

Neil
Shes all grey up front just like a commercial bus, then turn your head and there a five star motel behind you.....that's the beauty of them, from the front to the back there is such a contrast.
Base model to drive you there....when you get there shes all deluxe when your'e camping.
SO34 had the timber in the cab. |

Thanks for the added details, especially about the headliner panels, that is what I hoped to hear.
I like the two tone color scheme and look forward to putting some updates out add they are interesting.
Now, all you hoarders, come off some of your parts stashes and hook me up.
Cheers |

Sounds like a mullet... business in the front, party in the back.
But yes, Westfalia left the grey cab panels that were normal in the kombi.
SO-34s had wood cab roof panels, and wood or formica on boards for the cab door panels (depends on year) . Grey kick panels.
Dormobile SO-42 era westy buses had wood cab roof panels, grey kicks and grey door panels.
low milage 1960 Argentinian SO23 Westfalia, was Cris Torlasco's:
It's very nice.

pretty good start!
like mentioned, way harder to complete this bus than your deluxe! but you obviously have the care required, so I'm sure youll be able to put it together. _________________ drive your split. |

The bus was extracted from its lair this weekend and moved to a new home where it will stay while parts are collected.
Here are some current pics.
I have found a few key pieces that I needed for the interior but still need some, so if anyone has extra camper parts kicking around, let me know what you have.
Does anyone have a scrap of what the yellow curtain material should look like? If so, I would appreciate seeing a sample so I can have them made up while I am here where tailoring is super cheap. |

Killer bus! Did you happen to store your 15 window at Kent's place for a while? Looks familiar. I cannot wait to see the progress on the so23 _________________ 1952 Zwitter
