This is with the piston in, as shown on Ben's website.

http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_engine3.htm

Mine did come unseated when taking heads off, so want to do. Seems especially important on driver's side as the water jacket seal was in pieces and afraid debris could've got in there.

I think the sequence is as follows:

1) TDC on #1
2) Pull sleeve up on #1.
3) Do what Ben shows.
4) TDC on #2.
Repeat all the way around.

What ben doesn't show is putting cylinder sleeve back into place. Does it just slide in? Need to clean the seat somehow? I was just going to blow it out real good with compressed air to make sure no debris in there, but wanting to make sure.

Thanks.

Did the sleeve come out of the piston?

If so you need to compress the pistons rings!

Sleeve will sit into the case.

Check my Youtube Chanel, find my oldest video, there is a bunch on the head gasket job over there.

My concern is that with an O ring, you have a need to have the groove it fits into clean and free of bits. A small chunk or drift of grundge will cause the O ring to partly unseat as you are pushing the cylinder home, or cause it to distort and leak. So you have to run something like a dental pick around and around and then rinse with something to flow the dislodged debris out. So you'll have quite a confined space to accomplish this. Doable, but don't just stuff a new one in. In the last couple months, I pulled 8 WBX cylinders and found 3 of these O rings dislodged - most likely when installed. I'd use some spray oil to rinse/dislodge after careful cleaning and good light in that tight spot.

Just FYI for other rookies like me...this is just as easy as Ben makes it look in his videos. No reason not to do this.
