Hello, This one has me baffled. Just bought a manx with a 74 chassis / dual port motor. Just did a tune up and it is running like the plug wires are in the wrong position. Rechecked it and they are correct.. After getting more into it I decided to check the rotor position when cylinder 1 is at TDC. Confirmed # 1 piston is fully extended and both valves have a small gap. My timing pulley shows it is at BDC and not TDC. Any one seen this. I thought the pulleys were keyed so they can only go on one way. Any ideas? |

Just because a pulley has degrees on it does not mean it's smarter than you are. If the pulley is marked wrong, just ignore the markings |

If you pulley looks like this, with TDC at the 12:00 position and key way at the 9:00 position there is nothing wrong with your pulley....
If your pulley is different that is your problem... Have heard of at least two times over the years where pulley was marked wrong...

Also remember that it is a simple matter for an engine builder to drop the distributor drive gear into the case in one of 22 different index positions.
And if it is not indexed correctly, it is a simple matter to rotate the distributor or rotate the leads while keeping the same order to have No1 fire at TDC.
In other words, in between the pulley markings and the rotor arm position are two places where the indexing can be wrong - a badly marked pulley, and a non-standard indexing of the distributor drive gear.
But if the crank slot is at 9 o'clock, and the valves are rocking on No1 cylinder, then the rotor arm is pointing where you need to connect the No1 sparkplug.
No1 is not necessarily in the direction where the distributor is marked with a notch.
It is fairly simple to re-index a distributor drive gear, and fairly simple to completely mess up the gear on the crank (will need a strip down and new gear) if you turn the engine and let the distributor drive gear rise up and bind with the drive on the crank. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels
