I plan on going down to San Diego. Hook up with my brothers at the Type 3 Factory. Be in their caravan up to the event.
I will have camping gear - like a tent if needed. Ill be pulling a trailer behind the 64 notch.
If anyone wants to hook up on the travel down - like my Oregon Brothers or my LA brothers - lets figure it out now. Then caravan up with the SD boys to the event.
This is solid in my plans and will not change for sure. 2017 will be an epic T3 year. |

Reservations at Fernwood announcement;
We've had the managers at Fernwood resort block out a bunch of different accommodation types at the resort. There are campsites, tent cabins, adventure tents, hotel rooms and cabins. Everyone should make their own reservations and say it is for the Type 3 Rally. BUT, PLEASE WAIT UNTIL MARCH 1ST. The managers are going on vacation for a couple of weeks.
Here is a link to the Fernwood Website:
https://www.fernwoodbigsur.com/
There are a lot of other accommodations nearby as well -
Pfeiffer State Park - https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=570 is just down the road, and is awesome. Right now I'm thinking of having the Saturday night BBQ there. If you would like to stay here, the earliest you can make reservations is March 1st as well (Reservations can be made 7 months in advance on the first day of the month)

Post Ranch Inn is $1425/nite. That'd have to be one hellova tax return! |

They used to have 1/2 off local specials in winter (like 20 years ago). Did it twice. Back then it was like $400. It was amazing. There are people that rent the whole resort for a week for weddings. The whole resort! _________________ Tom Reay

Wow, as wonderful as our drought-ending rain has been, this kind of damage (and the flooding in San Jose, etc), is the flip side.
Have you heard further from there resort folks? Are they and their properties okay?
Thanks for bringing us the news. I'm sure we will have a great time regardless.
Without Highway 1 open a lot of businesses will really suffer. Perhaps Governor Moonbeam can carve out a little Train To Nowhere money and help these folks out? |

Fernwood is a is isolated for the time being and fine. They haven't had internet or telephone for a while. They are sort of the local town center right now. They will be okay. They will still get traffic from the north (soon, maybe, when the road opens). So will Pfeiffer State Park. The Bakery, Brewery, Post Ranch and Nepenthe are just on the south side of the bridge. They will only be accessible from the south.
Thanks for asking! There are a lot of people up there that this really hits home for. It's much more than just a inconvenience to them.
On to Cayucos! _________________ Tom Reay

Yeah, it's like five years of rain in a couple of months. I think everyone in Big Sur is dealing with storm damage of one kind or another. Lots of mudslides and fallen trees—Deetjen's lost one of their historic cabins to a redwood. A lot of people south of Pfeiffer Canyon are stranded because there are also slides across Highway 1 to the south. Not a good situation right now.
But by the time September rolls around, with any luck Pfeiffer Canyon will be the only place Highway 1 is closed, and if that's the case we'll take the rally up to Big Sur as far as we can go. We'll do our part to support the businesses south of the bridge.
And Cayucos will be great. The Borradori Garage will be the place to meet once again. _________________ 5/62 343

Is this a brand new slide?
Funny, I was just checking this thread and your chapter page for updates last night!
Looking forward to this rally! |

A brand new slide indeed!
Bunch of people are trapped now,
Not just the long way out - now it's NO way out..
One good thing comes from this, however..
(Always look on the bright side, right?)
There will be an epic sandbar there! _________________ Bus Motor Build

The little news I have read suggested that the road was closed before this let go, because of smaller slides being worked. Thank god, otherwise there could have been vehicles entombed under that, maybe as far as underwater and under the "new" beach, that would never be found! |

Planning for the rally continues! We're going to make Ragged Point the northern destination on Hwy 1 from our base in Cayucos, and we're exploring an interesting drive on inland roads for Friday. It's going to be another great rally, and we hope to see you there! |
Friday's cruise should be a lot of fun. Think: Oak tree lined two lane roads. An old salon in the country.....
I'm camping on the top of the hill in the picture this weekend and was up there a couple of weekends before. It's eerie being on highway One without through traffic. Around 6:00, there's no traffic at all! (It's actually great!) _________________ Tom Reay

The slide looks like it's just a bit south of our prior northern destination of Sand Dollar Beach.
The coastal route north from Cayucos includes interesting points of interest or stops:
- Cambria
- San Simeon (park/pier, Hearst Castle)
- Elephant Seal vista point
- Piedras Blancas lighthouse
- Ragged Point, short hike to Young Creek at the beach
Probably more than I list here but you get the idea... great view, views, plenty of rest stops and photo opps.
And then there is the inland drive... |
