Today I made some progress. I brought the engine tin and fan shroud to the car wash for some degreaser.
Before:
After:
My brother and I have decided that the winter is the best time to buy crap here in on thesamba. Most people are working on thier rides and trying to get rid of stuff. We scored thses heater boxes, sandblasted and shipped for $150
We also scored a very nice set of Solex 34 PDSIT with all the plumbing, air cleaner, linkage, and charcoal canister. $150 shipped.
So for all the people who buy project vehicles and wonder what you need to buy for parts this is what we have amassed so far....
Most of this was bought on CIP1. We have had really good luck with their parts lately. Now its time to start cleaning that stanky motor and putting shit back together. |

Heater boxes look great! Best deals in the classifieds on the samba are always in the winter. Thanks Everett for making things like this happen. If there was no samba, who knows how long it would take to gather parts? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

I've been searching the classifieds for weeks looking for the parts circled. Maybe i'm not using the correct search terms? Can anyone help? Also, #3 I've seen in plastic and metal. Is there a difference?
Specifically #2. What is that little piece of tin called? I can't find it anywhere?
Also, I can't find this tin. I searched breast tin, front tin, tin. And got nothing.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

#1:

You'll need the driver and passenger side pipes also which are different. Looks like this guy has both on the right side in that ad.
#2 (BUY THESE ASAP!):
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1949463
The gasket that goes between them and the heater box itself is NLA so here's Ratwell's write up on how to make new gaskets:
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Heating.html
This goes inside the engine bay between #3 and the fan booster mounted to the engine bay roof. You'll need that and the tubes (below) to keep the heater box heat from coming up and into the engine bay and overheating the engine itself:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1998170
Heater Blower tubes: (There's no special piece on the driver side between the blower motor and the heater box itself)
http://www.busdepot.com/211261235a
http://www.busdepot.com/211261236
The second picture is actually showing two pieces of tin and the heat shield as one unit. Not sure why? It looks like you have the piece where the oil filler neck goes through so you'll need this piece:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2020154
And the heat shield:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1885925
Also, your #4 tin is the '74-'75 preheat style tin with the hole in it. You don't have the preheat style muffler (no biggie!) so the hole needs to be plugged up. Jack could either figure out a coolguy way to plug the hole (Beer can maybe?) or you can buy the non-preheat style tin:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1947137
Either way, that hole needs to be plugged to keep the muffler heat out of the engine bay.
I'm still looking for that #3 item... _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

Wanted to mess with the 1800 dual carb setup. No time for FI. Personal preference for carbs over FI. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

I'll echo what Jack just said. And, FI parts are expensive and becoming obsolete. Some FI parts are NLA. Where as the PDST dual carbs are available and rebuildable. _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

Been slowly picking away at the engine. Did the push rod tube seals. Slowly putting things back together.

making slow progress. This engine was missing 50% of its cooling tin. Much better situated now.
Got a new alternator from O'rielys. I made sure to read all the threads here about mods so that it doesn't short out. I'll tell you, it was a PITA! so many modifications. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

I was able to fix the dual carb linkage. The small plastic cup was missing from the cylinder 1 and 2 side so I found a copper pipe fitting at the hardware store that should work for now.
Test fitted the plumbing for the carbs and air cleaner.
Then I replaced the plastic shift bushing with the german supply metal bushing.

old plastic bushing:
New metal bushing:
I having a hard time with the oil seal for the hockey stick. When I put that new bushing in with the oil gasket, the shifting rod did not fit back through. Do i have the wrong one? Does the new brass/copper piece need to be honed?
I had to remove it again. Guess I need to find a better one. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Small progress made. Picked up some rims off CL for $250 for the highroof. They're a little dirty, but should clean up.

So I was just about to be done putting the engine back together and I noticed that the cylinders 1 and 2 valves could barely be adjusted. The feel gauge couldn't even fit a .003 and the adjusting screw was basically all the way out.
So I did some investigating and there was some issues with cylinder number 2: Seems like the valve seat was blown off and kissed the piston head. Luckily there wasn't a huge mess in there. Must have made some noise and drove like a bag of hammers.
Cylinders 3 and 4 were really dirty and had vw markings on the valves. Someone really slapped this thing together.
What are your thoughts on top end rebuild? AMC heads? _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Have you pulled a cylinder and checked the ring end gap yet? If it's even close to limits I would just bite the bullet. Just that nick in the piston makes me nervous. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

I think new pistons, sleeves, and heads are coming up on the next parts order. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Finally found a new head to replace the messed up 1&2 cylinder head:
Does anyone know if 021.101.371S is a 1800cc head?
Started working under the bus too. Replaced the old shocks with some KYB gas adjust from rockauto.

It is a 1800 bus head. The only difference is that the fins might be a little smaller then the "H" head? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

Had a set of 1700cc heads rebuilt and machined for the 1800cc. FAT Performance in Orange Ca was recommended by Wolfgang International so Mark did some good work for us. Now it’s time to reassemble the motor.
I like how they stamp your name on parts!
The put all new exhaust valves, hardware, and plugged the egr holes.
