Got around to taking some pics of this weird exhaust. Super homemade but solid as a rock!

You're missing the lower engine tins that go between the heads and pushrod tubes. You'll want to hunt those down so the engine doesn't overheat. Also, because the heater boxes are gone you'll need to block up the holes that usually blow fresh air into the heater boxes. You'll just be letting hot air in from the exhaust that'll get blown back into the engine bay.
Good job pissing off the hippies too.. |
Is this what your talking about Jack?

Nope. That piece goes around the oil filler tube. Looks like you have that piece installed. You need #10 in this diagram:
https://www.google.com/search?q=VW+T4+engine+tin&a...NgpQqcM%3A
I honestly can't remember but I MIGHT have that L&R piece in that box of Tins Dan gave me a while back. I'll have to sell it back to him _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

I forgot to mention at the start of this thread... in case anyone wants to pack a tow bar in your checked bagged on your next flight. You totally can! I flew Southwest, two free checked bags, wasn't charged a dime!
Inspected by TSA of course, but well worth it! I feel bad they had to rip open my "Manny" layers of tape. _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

I did some cleaning out of nasty mouse pee and poop soaked carpet. Also washed all the pine pitch off the bus. This thing is pretty solid so far.

Last weekend my brother came up from DC to work on Tub Bus. I had spent enough time cleaning and gutting the old interior and cleaned the outside.
When removing the engine with trans attached you have to remember to take the two huge 17mm bolts on the top of the transmission to the bus.
Dan and Big Jack giving Tub Bus the reach around.
After all said and done its hard to get anything done when the sun goes down at 4pm.

Jack & Jack working on removing the axles from the wheels
Time for a break
Engine and trans finally out
Ready for winter refresh
Empty engine bay
Empty engine bay x2
Cleaning up after a long day
So while taking the engine out, we learned that the wiring harness is cut to pieces. So it looks like the bus will need a new main harness and engine harness. Planning to put dual carbs on the motor, which means it needs a 74 wiring harness. Who's sells bay wiring harnesses? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

Thanksgiving weekend is a great day to wrench!
Spent some more time in Massachusetts for thanksgiving. So we disassembled the motor for cleaning and evaluating.
First thing is first. We found the mouse mansion in the motor.
The case and shroud numbers match. There is a yellow repair slip in the bus from 10years ago with a "rebuilt built motor" installed. I'm wonder if "rebuilt" means new heads?
Heads are clean and have vw stamps on them
Looking down the intake manifold port... the valves look ok?
Thoughts?
No. 1
No.2
No.3
No.4
Still need to take the oil cooler off, clean install new seals. Plan is to clean the heads, make sure the mouse remants are gone, (make sure cooling fins are clean).
What's the initial thoughts after peaking into the heads a little? Should they come off? The engine turns over by hand nicely. Only turned it over a few times, but can hear the compression. _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

So my brother picked up this exhaust yesterday in New Jersey for "tub bus" and I think it's an aftermarket exhaust.
The seller said it was NOS and I have thoughts about it being that but was wondering which way it sat with the tail pipe either to the driver side or towards the passenger side.
Because we just ordered heater boxes and they're coming in the mail this week I'm not sure which way it sits so I was wondering if you guys knew which way it mounted?
We also had a bit more snow and you can't take a picture of a bus with snow on it without smiling

Tail pipe goes on the passenger side. Since this would have been FI, the EGR port is on the left. The original VW muffler was a few separate pieces, since the CA busses had cats, and federal ones didn't. That muffler is probably an NOS aftermarket one. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.
