Check out the hose behind the spare tire well on my '77. Does the "S" shape seem original or did a straight hose deform to that shape? The metal line from the front definitely slopes to the rear but the hose seems longer than a straight section would have been.

That doesn't look like the OG hose, I suspect whoever changed it last didn't use enough lube and couldn't get the front section slid on far enough so they said "fu*k it" and left it like that.

If you look inside the driverside air intake- you will se a little condenser that condenses the fuel vapor from the gas tank back to gas that runs down that tube and into the tank- SO- yup that has to be a good piece of line in there.

Oh--totally makes sense. The line needs to continually slope back to the gas tank, which it doesn't now.

This is useful on Ratwell:

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelHoses.html#fitank

(I find it much easier to change that tricky piece of hose when the vehicle is jacked up onto axle stands - you then don't have to become a contortionist to do it).

c fish is right- another hint in combination is to remove the stop light housing- then its a straight shot.

X2 on removing the LR taillight housing to make it easier, but you will need a deep socket.

Also, the little hose is not straight. The metal pipes are offset, so the hose even New will have a bend, but subtle, not like your bend!

Replaced this hose and BD was right (again!). It was a totally shot replacement hose. All good now.

It took me less than 5 minutes to replace. No need to remove anything unless you're super fat, out of shape or can't bend/kneel. I had to use a slightly longer piece. A little lube will help out a lot.

Did you stick half your body into the engine bay? I don't get why it would matter if your fat.

Now if your a short short man with stubby little arms that might make it harder. At 6.2 I just reached in there and got it done, with my gut happily resting upon the rear valance. Very Happy

What if you're short and fat?

I must confess. I installed it with the engine out. I'm sure I could do it as easily with the engine in. Laughing

Could be a good time to replace mine. Might explain the faint smell of gas in the engine bay too.

WD40 makes a great lube for doing a job like this, helping lessen the effort necessary to get the hose to slide on to the tubing. Also I would recommend using 30r9 or 30r14 hoses as they can handle ethanol laced fuel over the long haul.

I've come to like using a little smear of dielectric silicone grease for these kinds of things. I suppose it doesn't matter much.

I've got the Bus Depot 7mm hose and clamps. That'll work, right?

Does it say SAE J30-R9 or SAE J30-R14 on it?, if not I wouldn't waste the time to install it.
