Why not an implant of the full running gear of a Subaru EE-20.
About a year ago, I purchased an EE-20 full running gear from a company here in Florida for a different project, I think I pay around 5k for the complete set up, the unis had about 11K miles. Is just a question, don't know crap about doing the implant. |

A billet housing has additional material, which allows for an oiling passage and a secondary thrust bearing for the pinion shaft. The more durable material won't go egg-shaped in the mainshaft bearing bore either .. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Gears; looking really great! What's the main advantage of the billet compared to the all new aluminum housings? |
Strength. The part above is machined from a solid blank of aluminum. The VW aluminum part is sand cast and then machined. Nothing wrong with cast aluminum, but the billet part is should perform better under heat and stress. _________________ ☮️ |

I knew the billet is stronger than cast-should have phrased my question better.
It was info like the extra thrust washer, oil passages, etc. I was looking for. Thanks Gears!
Still hoping someone will put together a complete kit for extra oiling/cooling in a one stop shopping! Right now it seems there are many different approaches to these questions. _________________ Currently:

My hope is to provide a bolt-on oiling solution. The housing addresses 4th gear and mainshaft ball bearing. The GT mainshaft addresses 3rd & 4th needle bearings and mainshaft needle bearing. This leaves only the main case / pinion bearing mod that needs to be done separately. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Will there be a billet version of the main case? _________________ Patrick Brown

Probably cast rather than billet .. the advantage being a cast-in steel section, like the early Porsche 915 cases. However, this is 2 or more years down the road.
For now, steel-sleeved (reconditioned) OE cases should suffice. I've been amazed at the longevity of steel sleeved cases, going back to my drag-racing days.
This pinion bearing bore remained perfectly round after 100+ 9-second passes.

Is this new housing going to be pre-drilled for the addition of an oil temp sensor near the 4th gear bearing? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

No, but it has plenty of material if that's what you wish to do.
1st & 2nd gear / mainshafts are finally done !! _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Gears:
I went back a bit in this thread and looked at your classifieds also, but found no price or anticipated price for the billet housing. Can you advise? _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

I won't have a price on housings until the final design is arrived at, and they're in hand. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Sneak preview of one version HD housing prototype (for guys directing cooled oil to 4th gear):
Also note the steel thrust surface surrounding the pinion bearing bore. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

The above post and the pics below show how a billet housing can used to its full potential. The additional thrust bearing provides stability to the pinion shaft, especially beneficial when encountering shock loads during off-roading.
We make all our 4th gears with a wide machined thrust surface ..
.. specifically to accept this thrust bearing:

gears that is beautiful.
A couple questions if you don't mind.
1) were you planning to move the oil filler bung to the driver-side?
2) Could that oil-holder-arc could be a bolt-on piece, where each 4th gear ratio has a matched arc radius? This matched arc could also close off against the forward teeth ends to ensure the oil travels across the tooth in the rearward direction. _________________

Sodo, there will be a second oil-add hole on the other side, with a small level indicator hole to go with it (since the oil add hole has to go up high).
While the oil dam feature is fixed, we'll likely offer the housing with a thicker arc for lower gear ratios. This could easily be machined if a taller ratio were installed later on.
Not all housings will have that upper oil dam feature. If you're not pumping oil, the feature would be counterproductive.
There will be at least two versions of housing. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

I'm hoping that a lighter rotating mass will translate to better 2nd gear shifts. Here's a pic of our new, lighter Low gear, along with lightened Cluster and Reverse gears. (Anyone can perform this procedure with a 1/2" carbide drill and Bridgeport.)

Well, don't those look great!! Really gorgeous.
Any concern that the reduced mass won't tolerate the heat as well or will the greater surface area allow the oil to cool them even better? _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

No temperature difference .. just a bit less rotating mass for 2nd gear synchronizer to deal with. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary
