i do this regularly here, but not all of them can be saved. most has wear in the fixing "ears", where they ride on the fork. |

Just wanted to give a shout-out to Zundfolge1432 for this thread.
Thanks to his guidance I was able to rebuild two old-style throwout bearings.
One of them was an NOS Sachs bearing that I bought and ran. It gave me about 9000 miles of service before the however-many-year-old grease inside finally liquified and exited the bearing (I initially thought it was engine oil in the bell housing, but no, it was the remains of throwout bearing grease).
So, note to others, if you do buy one of these NOS, better rebuild it before running it just to get some fresh grease in there.
The other one I had in the stash of parts that came with my car was the original one from the car back in 1965. Visually different in that the outer housing is fully round rather than having the flat spots at top and bottom that the newer ones have.
It still spun but it sounded dry. Took it apart, bearing cage was metal. Luckily all the balls and races were good and I was able to rebuild it.
So now I have what should be a lifetime supply of high quality throwout bearings ready to go. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I wouldn't use distributor grease in a throwout bearing but I would use it in a distributor.
Wheel bearing grease should be ideal for a throwout bearing. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S
