Well, at least it'll fit. That was the thing that disappointed me about the Sew Fine kit, in that it was short along the tunnel. Well that and a couple of other things. Nice way to keep motivated Pedro. I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one, as I'm mainly watching the progress, but also picking up some tips along the way. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I met with Sewfine a couple of years ago and discussed a Type 34 carpet kit with them. I brought along all of the original carpet fragments I had collected over time and we compared their carpet templates for the Type 34 to these remnants. There were too many variations in the Sewfine template that I considered incorrect, not the least of which is the manner in which they cut the carpet pieces out of the roll. There's a definite orientation to the square weave for each piece and if affects the overall look when installed. Type 34s can leak and wool carpet shrinks when wet--and time has done my carpet fragments no favors, so all that had to be accounted for.
My intentions at the time were to help them improve upon what they've been doing so future buyers have more confidence in the Type 34 carpet kit--and, yes, I would get what I need the first time around. I abandoned the work because they wanted me to buy expensive carpet sight unseen. They didn't normally stock the color I wanted to use. Too much risk for me, so it remains another unfinished project. |

The last time I did carpet, I did it just like Pedro did his. I used the original carpet for a pattern and had a shop sew on the trim. I also laid it out to follow the grain.
I was surprised to see VW used velcro on the original.
Jack has my old set.

There's is a Pattern what Tom mention
There's a Pattern to Fallow
Here's some close up pictures
Same what I did on my 65 Razorboy
Except on my 68. Carpet #15 the direction was different
Was vertical. So I fallow it like that
Shops don't see these direction of Patterns just so they cant SAVE material
Once is install you can how Terrible it Looks on cars I seen
So I prefer do it my self and avoid disappointment and loose my cool
And also save some few 100s and just have I little FUN _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic

Does 5 yards include the 4 floor mats made out of carpet? Where did you buy your carpet?
The picture from the parts book is of the early carpet pattern, which changed sometime in the '63 model year in the rear jump seat arm rest area. Here's a picture from my wife's Type 14 which illustrates this, and Karmann made this same change to all models of Ghia:
I have NOS carpet with and without the Velcro. Velcro is definitely a 'late' thing. |

Thank you Compadre
5 yards does the Floor Mats too
That was Plan A
Thanks to Scott's Accessories I'm going Plan B
Looks Cleaner and Elegant to Me like I did on Razorboy
Might Not be Correct for 68 but that's what I want

My problem was, there wasn't enough carpet left in the car to make templates or anything from. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yes, that's right Scott. Yet another authenticity detail.
I'm rebuilding the Nautilus' wiper frame assembly right now and found a point of interest in the Blue Bentley regarding wiper shaft and bearing replacements. In '65, VW had SWF make the shafts and bearings a little longer, apparently to give the wiper arms a little more leverage against the windshield. This change also moved the wiper motor and frame towards the rear of the car a bit, which then caused the early Type 3 wiper frame to hit the back of the Type 34 fresh air controls. This necessitated a new Type 34 wiper frame with a sort of 'bended up' section that clears the fresh air controls. I found a new style frame in my stash of spares, so I'm all set once I get it cleaned up and painted.
I love the Type 34, but it's stuff like this that starts to pile on and makes me question my sanity. |

I would be in for a set too for the '65. OG rubber mat is deteriorating. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

We are all insane. Someone may take pity on us and call it addiction.
Like Pedro doesn't have anything better to do than make another T34, I need another VW project because trailers, buses, T3's and gas heaters aren't enough, you get so into the details that you find yourself deep, deep down the rabbit hole.
I need to purge some stuff here shortly _________________
