I know I know, just search it someone has already discussed this. Searching The Samba is impossible. Have an 85 and been experiencing a coolant leak lately due to the changing temperatures on the east coast. I live in a city so doing the work myself is tough and quite frankly I'm not the best mechanic. So just curious as to possible costs. |

Searching the samba is really easy - just go into google and type site:thesamba.com plus whatever search terms you want.
The cost of replacing the hose depends on which hose it is - in terms of the cost of the hose, the ease of replacing it and how much coolant you will lose. Some hoses are cheap and easy to replace and you might not lose much coolant. Some hoses are expensive or hard to replace and you might need to do a full coolant refill. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

it also depends ...... an hour job could be 50 bucks, or 150 bucks or some other value.
your best bet for an estimate is call around for an estimate.
If we know where you live, maybe some folks can give you a recommendation for a local shop that knows vanagons and hence can perform the task fast, and thus save labour time.
good luck _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Bay Area. East Coast.
I guess it doesn't matter. The only answer here is "It depends". From $50 for an easy access hose replaced through the engine hatch, to $700 for one of the large water pipes from front to rear. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

no need to blame the search,
labor costs are rarely talked about here and certainly with little specificity as it varies from shop to shop within the same town... so best bet is to make an appt and ask
maybe there's a shop and review listed for your area in http://roadhaus.com/shops.php _________________

To the OP, which city do you live in? Once known, couple of us might be able to recommend someone.
Oops! Bay area, east coast. That rules me out. Sorry _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.

Rule #1 for anyone who owns a vanagon: If you don't do the work yourself, you must have a good VW shop that you trust. Even if you do most jobs yourself you still need a good backup shop.
There is no way to know in this case if a hose clamp is loose or a long coolant pipe is cracked or the end falling apart. Could be a twist of a wrench, or a $1000 coolant system overhaul. That is why you need a place you can trust. |

"Coolant leak due to changing temperatures on the east coast."
Are you sure it's a hose?
I'd use the roadhaus resource to find a decent mechanic near your area and have him/her look at it. Or, just figure out which locally owned radiator shop has been in business since 1985 with the same ownership. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. East coast bay area can mean only one of 2500 places.
This really is nuts.

To even begin to answer a question like this...
Which hose or hoses, under what conditions, how much coolant. Show pictures if possible.
From there you might get a ballpark.
For metro areas I would guess the shop rate is between $125-175/hour. _________________ 1986 Weekender "Birch" |

We can all agree on that (children) - I think the sentiment is more that your original post didn't have enough information to answer it.
Also, while The Samba is difficult to search sometimes, as mentioned, using Google to search it helps a lot. You probably didn't find an answer because asking something so nebulous isn't going to get you any good answers. _________________ 1986 Weekender "Birch" |
