Hey folks, I now own a restored 1977 Type 2. It is my only vehicle, and therefore I don't have an existing insurance policy.
My predicament:
1) In Ontario, all conventional auto insurance companies I've encountered so far do NOT insure vehicles older than 1991 - unless they have been under policy the entire time, or you have an existing auto policy with that company. If not, you're SOL.
2) 100% of classic/antique auto insurance policies available in Ontario *REQUIRE* you to have an existing daily driver policy on another vehicle with another insurance company. As mentioned, I don't have another vehicle, and i'm not able to purchase one just to qualify for insurance - therefore, SOL.
Has anyone in my same situation (your bus is your ONLY vehicle) gotten a policy in Ontario lately? Brokers aren't of much help thus far and I'm running out of options.
Searched the forums, but there's very little Ontario-specific info, and we seem to have the strictest regulations around. Nothing like the USA or the other provinces. |

Hi Andrew,
Just came across your post. I'm probably not of much use... apologies in advance if that's the case! We have a '77 Westy that we took over ownership on in spring 2015 (from our in-laws), so had to work out insurance too. We have a daily driver though...
We're insured through our normal TD Meloche Monnex policy - not as a classic car or anything. In fact, for just liability coverage, I did not need to provide an appraisal. We upped coverage to include comprehensive this year and it wasn't too much more expensive - we had an appraisal done and submitted. Insurer called us and immediately agreed to the replacement value, no questions asked. Painless... Prior to that, they had suggested that I simply get a quote from our mechanic, not an official appraisal, but we wanted some peace of mind.
Anyways, perhaps try TD Meloche Monnex. Worst case, go for just liability coverage. Or, see if an appraisal or similar would twist their arm?
Otherwise, wonder how much a little sh*tbox car that you could call your daily would cost to buy and insure...
Good luck!
