Hi everyone, me again.
This time I'm reaching out to you in hopes some one knows where I can find the shim labeled as "B .81mm shim" below:
The one I have is warped, bowled out and I want to replace it to be safe. I've looked everywhere and the only place I was able to find one was the bus depothttp://www.busdepot.com/025105281, but they have to order the part and it will take 4-5 weeks to ship.
Any chance any of you have an extra one that they are willing to sell me, or know where I can purchase one?
Thanks _________________ 1983.5 Aussan Brown Westfalia | 2016 to 2020

Did you measure the play to check you still need a 0.81mm shim?
Bus depot seemed to be out of pretty much every shim I tried to order as back ups. |

I have not measured the play yet. I plan on doing that this weekend just to see. The fact that it is warped tells me that there was probably too mmuch play to begin with (I know, I should have checked before removing the flywheel ). Even if the play is within spec, isn't it better to replace it? Just because of the distortion that the shim has? _________________ 1983.5 Aussan Brown Westfalia | 2016 to 2020

Call Airhead Parts in Ventura. I don't know if that shim crosses over for use in air cooled(type I) or type IV motors(air cooled Vanagon motors). Not that far from you.
edit
Lookie what I found!

I was there yesterday talking with Alan and he said they don't carry them.
That one you linked to doesn't look like what I need. Is that an alternative to using the shim? _________________ 1983.5 Aussan Brown Westfalia | 2016 to 2020

If you haven't already, it might be worth calling/contacting some of the custom engine builders. RJE, Vanistan, NWCR, etc. I'd bet they have one, or if not, could make you one. Probably not cheap, but if time is of the essence...

You could use a third variable shim (C in the Bentley diagram) to complete the shim package and achieve the desired endplay.
The shim labelled B in the diagram, and the one that you need to replace is a larger outside diameter designed to cover the tabbed thrust washer A, then adding variable thickness shims C to achieve endplay goal.
The diagram in Bentley Mis-labels the shims B,C,D as .81mm, .75mm, .94mm, in corresponding order. These numbers should be 81mm, 75mm, and 94mm and correspond to the outside diameter of each.
Note that shim B 81mm OD has a fixed nominal thickness of 15 Thousands and the Shims C 75 mm OD are the variables.
You can use a smaller OD shim C up against the tabbed thrust washer A just use extra care to ensure that thrust washer A stays in place as you reassemble the entire shim pack. Note that the washer D was intended to do this job by acting as a holder/retainer against the fixed shim B.
Use a film of oil or sticky grease to help hold the tabbed washer A in place.
Variable shim C 021.105.289 is 15 thou thick so you could use that as your replacement for shim B and then add two more variable Shims C to achieve endplay specification.

4 years ago I ended up ordering them from a supplier in Europe because no one had them in NA. All the used ones that I had were worn. I see VWHeritage has them now.

UPDATE:
I ended up ordering from them and they were awesome to work with. They shipped the package right away an it was at my doorstep in about 3 days. Thank you for suggesting that. The shim's are now in and the endplay is set. Let's hope I got it right _________________ 1983.5 Aussan Brown Westfalia | 2016 to 2020
