And thirds, and firsts and fourths. In any gear the shifter wants to wander around. What can make the shifts tighter? Is the plate under the shifter worn? Nose cone?

My shifter acted like that right before the shift coupler broke. If the shift bushings are old, that can be part of the problem too. Last but not least, (and the worst job to do) the nose cone may be calling you!

Yup what Ken said. My coupler broke and when I was changing it I could see the shift rod bushing was worn too. Also the screws that hold the couplers to the rods could be loose.
