Thanks great information. Would you have the part number for that rubber piece ? I'm not sure what it is. Thanks ! |
It is the same profile that is used on the mud sills/hinge pillar and up front at leading edge of L/R fender to nose. At KGPR, when I bought for the mud sill it was enough for front and the short approx. 3-4 inch piece in the back.

Thanks, I'll order them now, I need them also. |
Unfortunately the part is out of stock, I ordered it last night and heard back this morning. Unsure when it will be back in stock. _________________ ----------------------

Not too bad for the first shot... this is just to see if this is the right direction. I think its going to be a Ghia soon...
The engine bay is not in the right position because the inner wheel housing at the driver side still has some deformation (about 14mm too "long") so we were not able to pull the fender towards the door. |

Its no "real" progress to the car but collecting parts has to be done as well
It was not easy to find a good shop for the rechroming but I think the result of the first parts seems to be acceptable:
I also got a set of NOS tail lights from canada:
And after reading your experiences in the stainless steel thread I decided to order from PTT. The bumpers arrived last week but I am going to mount them for testing as soon as the welding is done.

Its done! The fender is in....
Thats the biggest step so far and I am very happy about the result. There are just some little dents that have to be corrected and some pewter that has to be put on to get ready for the blasting.

Merry Christmas Guys!
Yesterday we wanted to approve the final position of the engine bay. Basically everything seems to fit quite well. We just measured a difference of about 8mm from left to right but I guess this is sufficient and will be covered by the seal.
BUT unfortunately there is also some new bad news. Obviously the fork for the transmission got bended due to the crash the car had before we bought it. We have measured 15mm from left to right so it needs to be straightened.
I hope this can be done without any cutting.
You can see the problem by comparing the heater boxes in the next picture:

That's actually a pretty easy fix. They bend easier than you might think. Don't heat them, and you shouldn't need to cut and weld anything. After you get it aligned, you might consider additional support for the engine and transmission. |

A very good support bar for the rear of the engine is Gene Berg's 647A: http://www.geneberg.com/cat.php?name=Karmann%20Ghia&cPath=353
Easy to install using your Ghia's bumper support bolts. You can paint the bar and the down-rods semi-gloss black so that they are not readily visible from behind the car. This bar might be too much if you drive conservatively and have a mild engine, but it would certainly good prevention for future frame horn bending once you have yours back to level. |

I hope so! Thanks for the advice.
Do you think its neccessary to support the transmission if I am going with a stock 50hp engine?
I think I could live with something like that:

Looks like a Kafer bar to me which is for frame strengthen and not transmission support. _________________ ----------------------

Here is a picture of a similar construction that has been installed...
I think it can help to support the stiffness of the pan because it fixes the transmission fork.

That kit isn't going to fix the transmission frame horns, those will have to be straightened, repaired, or replaced prior to installation of the support kit. They will however add some support to the frame horns so that they're less likely to twist or fail in the future. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

They may also interfere with your heater boxes. Depends on whose trust bars they are from. _________________ ----------------------

Necessary? Not with such a mild engine and conservative driving-off habits. I'm just slightly concerned that because the frame horns have been bent, after you straighten them to be level, the bent areas are not as stiff as originally.
If you decide in the future to modify your engine, the Berg-style rear traction bar can still be retrofitted quickly with the engine in the car. The Kaefer brace appears to require quite a bit more time to install. |
