Mike - hope you have better luck with those devices than I did in the recent past. I've purchased the same new over the last few years and BOTH went south within a year!! _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Waiting for parts gives me the unfortunate time to clean and repair.
Not may fave but gotta get the tin and shroud cleaned up. The PO did not run a thermostat so I'll be adding that too. This is a doghouse shroud and should help make this single port 1600 a dependable daily driver...which is the goal.
Brosol fuel pump getting a refresh too.

Doghouse Shroud is rehabbed and put a coat of paint on it. All the flaps are working and I attached the thermostat rod thingy. I seem to recall it needs to be attached before putting the fan shroud on??

I'm going through the same stuff now. Got a decent shroud, but the flaps were removed. Got a shroud with flaps, but it is rough and rusty. So I will pull the flaps out.
72' came with a single port? Thought 1970 was the last year for those. |

Mike, on the flaps, I recommend adding a drop of engine oil at the flap shafts. The shafts have a small amount of play in them front/rear, like 1/8". Place a drop of engine oil, or even 3-in-1 oil onto the exposed section of the shaft. Push the flap the other direction to expose the shaft on the other side, and place another drop of oil there. Wiggle the shaft front to rear, then rotate the flap to work the oil onto the shaft. Do this to each flap, as well as the down-rod for the thermostat.
Yes, that thermostat down-rod needs be attached like you have it before you lower the shroud down onto the long block. You need to see where the small hole is in the right cylinder head where the rod passes through, aim the rod down the hole and rotate the entire shroud slightly as you lower the shroud and see that the rod comes out the bottom of the head.
When you attach the cylinder cover tins to the heads, coat the fastening screws with anti-seize. When the screws are nearly tight, push the tins toward the center of the engine so that the opposite ends nearly, or do touch the engine case sides. This reduces/eliminates an air gap where cooling air can leak out. Then tighten the fastening screws.
As you set the fan shroud down onto the cylinder cover tins, make certain the shroud fits/slips inside of the cover tin top edges. Use a plastic wedge to pull the cover tin edges out as needed to slip the shroud inside. It's like tucking your shirt into your pants. |

Do the generator posts need to be in this position? I thought I read it somewhere. I'd like to put them more on top than in the 2-3 o'clock position they are now.

There is an opening on the bottom of the generator from where air comes into it and cools it. This opening needs to match the location of the opening on the stand. _________________ **1971 Super Project

Be sure to use knee pads. It'll take a while to install the carburetors. The engine looks good.

Lookin good!
But ya, as Tim said, be sure to wear knee pads, you will be down there a while. I usually end up using a combanation of 3 different socket extensions to reach the forward nuts. _________________ 71' Super Convertible (Orange)
