With the case empty, I always check for block warpage. To do this you put the case together, empty and no with bearings, and only use the 6 large case half nuts, torque them to spec. Then make sure the case halves come together "flush" where the center main bearing support surfaces meet up... you can do this by aiming a bright flashlight from the flywheel end while you look in at the pulley end and see if you can see any light showing where those surfaces meet. If it's not flush, you'll see "light coming through the crack" and, well... Just Say No to Crack! Twisted Evil I think the 36HP engines are less likely to suffer from this problem than later blocks, but I'd still check for this.
