Newly rebuilt 1600 sp. New CB Performance ICTs'. Cleaned thoroughly and set floats. Fuel pressure @ 3psi. Idle jet 57.5 & main jet 135 (sea level) Timing set 3k rpm @ 30 degrees for 009 distributor. Valves dialed. It's idling fairly smoothly at 1400rpm with idle speed screws at 0 turns. Plugged balance tube and driver carb has vacuum per gauge but passenger does not. Passenger side has vacuum but I guess far less than driver side. Unplugged balance tube and placed gauge almost closed on driver carb and engine died.
Vacuum leak on passenger carb? Best way to test?

You can try propane from an UNLIT torch. Or WD40, someone recently said that worked for them. Hit the obvious connections. One at a time and listen for changes, stumble/increase in idle as each location is sprayed. Once the offending leak is found fix it and move on with all of the other untested possible leaks.
I had a set of those carbs years ago on a 1776. They were ok.
Good Luck. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Check your manifold where it bolts to the head. Those manifolds will crack/break if you tighten them even a hair too much. I've broken two brand new ones.
I didn't realize it was cracked until I tried to dial in the carbs and that one had almost no response to any turn of the adjustment screw.

Thanks for the responses and guidance. I'll start testing all the suspect points. It's weird that the manifolds are so fragile. It will be so nice to get these things dialed in. _________________ '90 Vanagon

Well I went to search for the vacuum leak. It ran briefly and now it just won't start. It has gas, I'm going to work backwards and check spark to eliminate ignition as the problem. I had electronic points fail in the past with the same symptoms.

Ok I don't want to start a separate "won't start" post so here it goes. Engine specs are listed at top of post.
I reinstalled condenser/points (correct gap). Static timed. Tested the coil and it's good. Pulled plugs (plug wire orientation is correct) and they looked good. Valves are dead on. Intake manifolds have no visible damage or cracks. Shot carbs with starter fluid and it started and ran briefly. So it's getting ignition. Some how it's not getting fuel? Fuel filter has fuel and it's clean. It ran a few days ago so I can't figure out what might have changed.
