If you aren't a welder and want a Bus that isn't a lipstick-on-a-sow, skip it.
If you are into a crusty Bus to drive, go for it.
Rust is about 10x worse than it looks, on a good day. _________________ .ssS! |

I'm an okay welder. Not into crusty though. I'm looking for long term project. It's for my dad really, I'm trying to find one for him because he had one. He'd love to just have one and slowly re do it. I think it is an auto, but has no tranny and I found a manual tranny. Can I bolt it up like that? _________________ '67 Beetle L41

that looks like accident damage. What does the rest of the bus look like? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

No, that's through rust on the bottom. It's had at least one paint over. I'll bet the bus has more stories to tell. Yes we need more pictures to give better advice. |

Here is what I've been sent
That spot to me looks like the worst spot on the whole thing minus it missing an engine and trans. Can I put a manual trans on a auto bus? _________________ '67 Beetle L41

I'm also looking at a '69 for him, but haven't gotten a response from the guy (though he read my text...) _________________ '67 Beetle L41

that bus has some serious rust, looks like mine did. the rust can be addressed but like was said previously there is always more than you can see initially. I'm guessing just about all the rockers are gone too. It comes down to time, how much are you willing to pour into it? _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Me and him are gonna do it together, so the weekends. This is a secret right now( think Christmas or birthday surprise) but we want to get it to South Carolina for the eclipse. Here's the '69 I'm looking at.
The only other bus it that other '73 I found in CT but it's 3000 and it doesn't run. Is super solid though with only a little rust. I may have to see if I can get that guy down more. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

These are 3 year, 30k projects - if you are fine with that, go for it.
Parts for the Type IV engine are getting rarer and that won't change _________________ .ssS! |

that 73 looks like it was in the same shape mine was in initially, checkout the first few pages of my build thread. I thought it would only be a few panels initially but after spending alot of time doing the critical stuff i still have lots of panels to replace before I can even think about paint. Just be aware of the time required. If you have the welder the cost is actually cheap and finding donor cars makes it even cheaper. Looking back i wish i had spent more upfront to enjoy the vehicle sooner. _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Go west young man, and find a lower rust runner for 3-5K, it will be best money spent despite shipping costs _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

The wait, get rid of smartphone, cable TV, until you have the dough to buy a dry one. Buying a rust bucket isn't any cheaper -its even more expensive as you sink money into the Bus without adding value. _________________ .ssS! |

I know, but I want a project. I don't want a rust free one, which may sound bad, but I want to do metal fab and welding and all of the things rust free busses don't need. This white one is the best one I've found. It's 3k, has the tent, it's a '73, needs minor welding, floors are solid, and the engine turns. This is my best bet out here. Shipping from the west isn't really an option... _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Patience, patience, patience
They are out there. Spend some time here asking questions, make friends, and enlargen your search sphere. For instance, I cruise from Cleveland to BOS on business so if you find something and want to work it back to the East Coast, I can help you there with a tow.
In short - take months,as in many months, to find your project - OK?? _________________ .ssS! |
