I am "rebuilding" a 30PICT-1 solex carb. I have a rebuild kit, and yes I know they aren't the same quality as the OG ones, but its what I have. In looking at the AP diaphragm, the one in the carb doesn't have any rips or tears, but it is a different material and rather rigid compared to the one that comes in the rebuild kit. The one in the carb is more of an orangish color whereas the rebuild is black rubber.

Id rather use what's there, but is the rigidness supposed to be like that? When I pulled the other 30PICT-1 apart that I have, it had the same sort of rubberish diaphragm..

rigid is not good, it needs to flex. If you search the classifieds there are original solex diaphragms for sale sometimes.

So the one on the left isn't original? When I say rigid, it does move, its just not as flexible as the one on the right. Kind of like the difference between card stock and notebook paper... When I assemble it with the one on the left the accelerator arm still moves in and out well. I'm just trying to determine if its dried out or useable? If not useable, Ill just put the one on the right in. I have one in my other carb and it runs decent.

could be original and the ones in the new kits are not as thick but I've never had any problem with them. install the old one and see if you get a good squirt out of the dump tube.

I know what you mean about the one on the left, it sort of pops in and out really firmly.

I always thought that meant they were worn out and would crack soon.

I've replaced ones that were like that but it was usually because the cover was leaking, I had assumed it was because the material got too hard to seal.

The rubber hardens with age. If it is so stiff it "oil cans" then it is well past its prime.

One tip I read ages back: Install the accel pump cover somewhat loosely, maybe one full turn loose on each screw. Then open the throttle all the way, and while holding it there, tighten the screws of the pump cover. This ensures the diaphragm is not overstretched at full throttle, making it last longer and giving a more consistent injection.

Works for me. I'll just put in the one form the kit.

I've NEVER used any sealant on such diaphragm in either in a Solex carburetor or a Weber carburetor.

Remember that most RTV sealants are NOT gasoline resistant !!!
