PostPosted: Sat Dec 03, 2016 7:48 pm    Post subject: Engine mounts Reply with quote

New owner of a 2000 eurovan mv with 147,000 miles and in need of the engine and trans mounts changed. Taken it to a shop and was quoted $1000 just for the parts. I have seen the right engine mount and the pendulum trans mount for around $80 each unable to find the left engine mount online. My question to the folks here, Is changing the mounts an easy job and is the shop raping me on parts cost? Any help will be appreciated.

Got the van for cheap and it needs some work done, I've been looking through many a post here and have yet to see one on the engine mounts. The mechanic says the engine is sagging and rubbing on the steering rack.

thanks

Assuming they are quoting you full retail with mark-up and possibly shipping sadly the price may not be out of line.

Here is a mount set for reference but they may not ship to you due to weight.

http://europarts-sd.com/engineandtransmissionmountkit1997-2003.asp

The replacement job isn't bad for someone with the right equipment and right aptitude.

I started a wiki article when I did my 1997:
http://vweurovan.wikia.com/wiki/Engine/Transmission_mounts

I still need to get back under there and finish with the pendulum mount. I didn't have all my tools with me when I did the left and right ones, but now I don't have an excuse.

I've changed mine out on two different vans. Can be done with an engine hoist or at least a floor jack for the front two. Very little wiggle room. The pendulum will be easier if you have the van on ramps, or at least was for me. Keeps everything about in the right place.

thanks for the help and quick responses. I will give it a shot. The EV is going to be a project so anything I can do myself will be nice on the pocket book. I have a list of things to do it

thanks again

For a better understand of why this is bad bad bad, read the europarts-sd page dedicated to the engine mount kit. It describes the damage that can occur to the power steering pressure pipes.

There is also a bracket with a rubber snubber block that pushes up on the down-pipe to prevent contact with the rack. I bought a new rubber block for mine as it was long-gone.

I recall buying FEBI mounts for my 1993 (maybe different than the 2000), it was 2 uppers and a lower. I paid just over $100 shipped for the parts. The lower was a bit tricky but I managed to swap it out without any instruction, just looking, thinking, wrenching.

$1000 for parts seems knucking Futz to me.

You're right about the ramps. I finally got under there and replaced my Pendulum Mount. I aborted replacing the tranny bushing, though. Somebody smarter than me is going to have to show me how to do that.

I let my curiosity get the better of me and ordered a Febi 37099 bushing from an Ebay seller in the UK and had a machinist press it into my original pendulum arm for me. If I ever figure out an approach to the trans bushing and get back under there, I'm going to swap the original back in. That Febi bushing just looks more heavy duty to me. More photos in the wiki article.

I had to do this too. The symptom here is a sharp resonant vibration st about 2000 rpm

i seriously doubt that one little bumper will solve your problem if the main mounts are worn enough to contact the PS line. the engine mounts on these vans are beefy.

the damage/contact happens first when the engine is pulling hard at around 2k rpm. if you accelerate slowly enough it may not happen even if the mounts are really worn.

eventually the mounts get so worn that it happens under normal driving acceleration.

i drove mine some 10k miles with this issue just by being careful to back off immediately if i felt it contact. finally replaced the mounts last month and there really wasn't much damage to the PS line.

huge difference new vs old.

Just had the left and right mounts done on my van (180k miles), and it made a dramatic difference in the way it drives. Like mvaska, I was nursing the van along by taking caution not to get to the point where I felt vibration in the steering column. I thought replacing the mounts would only impact this concern, but the van actually drives SO much more smoothly and I feel like we have lost power/acceleration back.

I was going to do the job myself, but I'm running short on time. Shop did it for $600 out the door. Worth every penny IMO.

I need to get this done, and I need to buy the parts.
At Partsgeek, they list 4 engine mount parts:
Febi 7445-08053378 Engine Mount
Febi 7445-05817685 Engine Mount
Febi 7445-05817685 Engine Mount Right
DEA 7445-07199854 Engine Mount Front Right
Similar situation on Ebay.
Are left and right mounts identical (as first two items seem to indicate)?
If different, anyone know of a source for the Left one?
Many thanks.

Assuming you have a 1999 by the part #'s then no. the passenger side mount is different than the drivers side.

If you you were talking a 93/95 Eurovan, then yes, they would interchange between left and right. On the conversation about interchangeability, the early and late model drivers side mount/bracket can be swapped between the two.

Does anything need to be braced when replacing the pendulum mount? Doesn’t appear so but this could also be famous last words.

No. Although the engine/tranny will want to swing forward some when removing the pendulum mount while the van is level. I suggest having the van on ramps to keep the engine/tranny closer to its normal position.
