The motor started out as an AP series type 4, with a pair of 41 x 34 valve heads, a mate had it tucked away for a rainy day and after a change of plan, it was mine.
It needed a crank regrind and new bearings, which Coolair handled for us along with a new cam, followers and cam bearings.

The motor itself had been poorly maintained and the oil had burned and gummed itself to most of the moving parts:

Sadly both of the heads had seen poor repairs before we got them, they had lots of cracks in each combustion chamber and Stateside Tuning deemed them fit for scrap and returned them to us Sad

We went for a set of AA Products 1915 piston and barrel kit, quality looked good, to compliment this, we also went for a pair of AMC heads from VW Heritage

We're lucky in the fact that we have a Bridgeport Milling Machine with lots of angle plates and tooling, we set to and did the VW oil spray mod to the conrods, as per the tech bulletin

Before we started to rebuild the motor, we weighed the conrods - it turns out that they have all been weight matched to within 0.1 grams of one another. We used very accurate measuring equipment!

Deck height was set to 1.52mm on all cylinders, they measured up very good, we were pleased here (the measurement in the image was an example of how to measure for someone)!

So, the spec is:
1915 type 4
weight matched conrods to within 0.1 grams with the oil spray mod
con rods & pistons measured for length and mated until they measured 86.16mm for #1 and 3 and 86.04 for #2 and #4, as per what the Wilson book describes
Distributer is a Bosch 0231 168 005 SVDA, VW p/n 021-905-205/P
228mm 2.0 flywheel
Weber 34 ICT Carburettors
Vintage Speed Exhaust, twin side oulet

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

its been rolling road tuned here in the UK and outputs 96bhp at the flywheel!

Moving on from our '73, we also own a 1977 Westfalia Campmobile which was imported into the UK from Santa Cruz back in 2011, we called him Major. He has a comprehensive service history, he has been used lots since we bought him.

Here he is when we first bought him home:

He was pretty much original - the upholstery, curtains, mosquito nets, storage box between the seats, table and hook up cable. Also there was a pair of roofbars which need refurbishing. He has never let us down so far which is a testament to being looked after by the previous owners

The years have taken a bit of a toll with signs of rust and rotten patches starting to come through, we did a survey of what we could see that needed work, doesn't look much but as we go round sorting the issues found, it could need more.
The areas so far are
Sliding Door
Drivers cab door
left hand battery tray
oil cooler needs sorting & relocating
new front panel
roof needs painting and new seals & canvas
new window seals
Upholstery

The first place to start was the sliding door, this had a rotten piece at the bottom around six inches long, two inches tall.

We used pieces from the Klokkerholm inner repair panel to make good the inside, overall the rot didn't warrant a whole section.

Gentle skim of filler on the weld, sort the bonding on the inner frame as it had hardened losing the seal to the outer skin.

Quite pleased with the shut lines, all of the locks work as they should so we popped a new trim panel on and inserted the louvre window.
