What is a 2008 GTI worth these days?

First post in this section. I have a question about a water pumper VW. My Jetta TDI is being bought back on the 22nd - in less than two weeks. I'm looking for something to replace it and come across a 2008 GTI - the guy is asking full retail of $8500. The car has 92k miles on the odometer. Normally I'd pass and keep looking but it has some interesting sounding modifications that I have no idea what they are or what their value to the car.

On a car with that many mods it's likely to have been thrashed. Also, one or two mods can/will enhance performance but there's a point where they can start conflicting with the other modifications. Modifications detract from the overall value. Unless you can negotiate a couple of weeks of warranty or trouble free seat time, I would offer substantially lower knowing that there's easily $2,000 worth of something that will need to be corrected, changed, or repaired in the near future.

Too many mods, not enough history of how the car really is, and the price is way too high. I would pass or expect a hefty discount.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll have to find something in the Seattle area. Seems like everyone around here likes to jack the prices up 20% or more and for no good reason. I've seem the same year GTI with similar miles and zero mods for around $6000. I'll find something to replace the Jetta.

Unless you like the premium price, look at a base Golf and do the upgrades you want plus the car is much less likely to be beat.

I did that on my 2016. Got the base "launch edition", did dropped coils, 17" wheels and will do the APR tune in the spring. Saved about $10K on the new purchase price.

He's trying to pass on the mods in the price of the car which really don't add a value in terms of resale. Unless they do to you.

Having been a car dealer for many years, factoring in the miles are below the average for the year (avg is 108k), the seller is about $2k on the high side of what I would call an average car being that is has some body damage and is in need of a windshield.
