Two of the door on my 74 181 are warped - bottom of doors are flush with the body, but the tops of the doors stick out approximately 1/4" to 1/2". Does anyone know what causes this and / or how can they be straightened?

I have one door like that, no real wisdom on how to straighten it though. Be aware the rather flimsy center post can affect front and rear door alignment in funny ways too. Post a picture if you get a chance.

Did you try loosening the bolts on the hinges and shifting/forcing the doors around a little? It helped a little bit on my Thing.

Great advice. Will check out these options.

Thanks all.

As KAmes has said the center post could be moving. Are the rockers rusted? Shut the doors and push the post in and out and see if the alinement changes.

Thanks for the info.

The air-cooled VW mechanic that works on the 181 suspects the hinges.

No rocker panel rust and the post is solid - not that is hasn't moved or shifted. I am going to have a body shop look at it and will add to the post.

The doors weren't completely closed and that is why they appeared out of alignment (warped). waugamans was almost correct. Shutting the doors requires a really hard close. Problem solved.

Plus a couple of rattles went away.

Thanks to all for the input.
