Hello, you may remember me as the (now former) owner of "Scoops", this dusty conditions truck:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=581489
Or my '62 turkis bug:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=310508
I had great times in the truck, but I wanted something to camp in. So, I made a deal with a local-ish guy for this extremely rusty '64 Bus:
Flames, dude!! (Boat not included).
It was full of shag carpeting and fiberglass insulation that rotted everything out. So the following documents my ongoing attempts to get this thing road-worthy.
***WARNING: MAJOR HACKAGE AHEAD.***
I am in no way an expert on rust repair, and I am going to include mods that are for me. I figure this bus was in bad enough shape to give me some creative freedom.
Enjoy. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Fitting driver's side WW dogleg:
Slight mods needed:
Welded in:
At this point I moved to the passenger side. This part was rotten where the floor connected to the headlight support:
Tacked in:
At this point, I was going to try and save the outer skin of this dogleg, and use a Gerson inner piece to splice in. (That didn't work out.)
Pass. A pillar repair (cheating!):
Innovative Clamping Solutions:
At this point, I decided to hack out the rest of the pass. dogleg. It was in rough shape, and the Gerson piece was waaaay off in several areas:
It would have been more trouble than it was worth. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Continuing with A pillar repair:
Welding protip: Never show anyone your welds before you grind and paint them.
Starting on pass. side B pillars (damn you shag carpeting!)
I believe this piece was from an old seat pedestal base patch:

Pretty sloppy, I know:
Fitting the new dogleg:
I had to fix a lot of the seat pedestal edge:
Dogleg welded in - when checked against the door gap, I needed to push the center up a bit to get a nice consistent gap. Note floor jack:
Plug welded to seat base, getting ready to fit WW front floor and pedestal base patches:
Test fit:

How do you like the WW floor? I was thinking about picking one up this winter to do my floor. |

The WW floor and doglegs are nice. Some fitting around the A pillars and around the seat base is needed, but I don't forsee any big problems. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Tonight's progress:
Needed to trim about 1/8" from the rear of the floor, and round some corners:
Seat pedestal bottom patch:
Needed some adjustment.
Clamped in
Tacked:
Sloppily painted, floor test fit:
Next to finish up some patches on this side, then do the same thing on the driver's side.
Question: Does anyone make the metal seal channel that goes around the door opening? _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.
