Finally getting around to building this car I purchased a few years ago. I am really thankful for having a t3 guru for a friend! He has helped me figure out the correct 69 only parts to purchase and find. We have purchased a couple other 69 squares to help the project along, which I find to be a godsend when it comes to having the correct year/era parts for the rustoration... I had been collecting parts for over two years thinking this was a peru green car until we traveled 3.5 hours to purchase a peru green parts car. I brought a fender along to see if the original paint would work and or match for better panels and such. Come to find out, my car is not peru, but deep sea green, which my friend said he had never seen another squareback of this year painted. I did a search on the gallery here and found 2-3 fastbacks and a 411-412. It does not seem to be a common color for 1969 so my search for original paint panels and doors are now even harder to come by if not near impossible. I will try to update pics as I go along and any help is greatly appreciated! _________________ If the RV Hut is a rockin, don't come a knockn'

Nice! My first car was a '69 and it was Deep Sea Green. It was mostly primer but the inside was still original paint. Post up some pictures when you get a chance. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Thanks for the photos, rat. Your repaired and painted pan looks excellent. On my deep sea green '70 Fastback which I've not driven in several years, I discovered similar severe rust like on your tunnel bottom this past summer. The last 4" up front behind the T crossmember is rotted thru so I can clearly see the "ceiling" of the tunnel. The crossmember also has rot holes under the brake master cylinder. I bought a length of 1/8" thick mild steel from Lowe's to cut and make patches but have not yet started. Will need help from local VW shop friend to weld in the patches. At least my engine runs. Are you using original metal from a parts car for your tunnel and crossmember patches, or also make your own?
On mine, all 4 bumper mounts have also rotted, and I have holes in the floor near the pedals. I regard my car as worth saving, since I bought it with 40,000 original miles and a very well maintained interior. |

We made new patch panels from scratch to fix these areas... I think the fella in Arkansas I purchased the car from might have had the car sitting on the ground at some point or maybe the guy before him. Fixed now though. Yes these deep sea green cars seem to be quite rare. My buddy here in atl has been buying t3s for over 25 years and has never seen or come across another 69 square painted sea green. He checked the t3 registry and same story, no sea green squares.... whomever purchased this car way back when spent a lot of extra money to get what they wanted...seems they were willing to wait to have this car painted in Germany and have it delivered to the states or Canada _________________ If the RV Hut is a rockin, don't come a knockn'

1/8"/11ga (0.125") is really thick for repair metal. I use 18ga. (0.0478") for repairs.
I believe VW bodies and pans are mostly 19ga (0.418"). _________________ 1988 Ford Festiva L

Yes of course. I have been buying all the nos t3 heater parts I could find over the past two and half years. Hooking up the a-c with a modern compressor and fittings _________________ If the RV Hut is a rockin, don't come a knockn'

Which A/C system do you have? The one that has a belt to the special aux pulley on the fan or the one that has a belt to a double pulley on the generator? If the former, you have zero extra room for a different compressor that's any different than original even with the air cleaner mods you'll need to make. If it's the other type you *might* get away with a Sanden but I am doubting it.
The original compressor is quite efficient with R134a and a parallel flow condenser. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Por 15'd the bottom of the pans, two coats on the interior side as well. My friend replaced the wire harness in the front of the car, we started pulling the new rear harness through. Went thru all the original parts pulled from this car, cleaned, blasted, and painted all of them ready for install if needed. Blasted all the original hardware as well, need to paint this today. Need to go buy some shrink wrap today in long length to mend some old sleeves. Also restored some of the fuel injection parts yesterday. Got a lot done, keep at it so it's ready for spring! Thanks for your input my man! I am going to buy an original unit local just in case I can't fit a new smaller unit. I have been reading threads about people adding ac units to their car. I have a good friend that was selling new units for hot rods so I hope he will be able to steer me in the right direction as well. Ronbug in Israel used a Sanden compressor on his A/C install along with an under dash unit I refurbished for him
but if you go check out his A/C install thread he's not using the stock air cleaner and you'll be able to see exactly what I am talking about.
Is your gas heater the style that mounts under the front bonnet or the style that mounts above the trans? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
