Very cool- then this car is an easy A/C system install. On the second- design cars the OEM condenser went in front of the front beam but that doesn't work on a first design car as not enough room. This is why you saw the '68/9 cars with the added vent in each front fender inside the bullet signal- they put a small condenser in each front fender and connected them.

In Chadd's case, since he has the BN2 under the bonnet, brackets can be fabricated and a slimline cooling fan attached to the top of a modern parallel flow condenser with the receiver/ dryer built right onto it and it can be suspended from the floor above the trans, like I did on Rick Christensen's notch. this makes for an efficient and clean install.

Rat, get yourself one of these tools:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-A-C-AIR-Condtioning-Hy...Sw4GVYURl6

It's worth its weight in gold.

Then get one of these condensers:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/181701086765?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I *think* this is the correct size but they are available in different sizes.

Cooling fan:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Be-Cool-75082-12-Euro-Blac...mp;vxp=mtr

Zip tie it right on top of the condenser. Wire it to come on with the compressor.

Then you can get all the fittings, ferrules, and seals you need from John Kulak on eBay- very knowledgeable and very fast shipping:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/johnjoysyl/m.html?_ipg=50&_sop=10&_rdc=1

Finally, you'll need bulk A/C hose in size 6, 8, and 10 available on Amazon in 25 foot rolls dirt cheap. Part numbers are Four Seasons 55006, 55008, 55010.

Affix your hoses to the floor along the passenger side edge up in the little channel using the correct size cushioned cable clamps:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wire-Loom-Cushioned-Cable-...SwpDdVHzCS

You'll be able to make all your own hoses that look professional and do a great install like this for cheap. Get a set of R12 to R134a adapters, give it about 5 oz of synthetic refriferant oil, and charge her up with about 3 cans R134a from the parts store. Buy or borrow a set of gauges to do it right. Some charging hoses that you just stick on a can have a gauge; these work well too.

My buddy has that tool at Napa for crimping the hoses I think. I have seen and smelled him doing this a couple times when I have walked in the door. I wonder if you would be interested in flying in for the install if I paid for your flight and time. this is obviously not your first rodeo with typ3 ac units and you are a huge help! what do you think?

I think it's money you don't need to spend, LOL. It's not rocket science and I can walk you through any bumps in the road.

I've actually done way more of these on classic 1960s Mercedes with Kuhlmeister or Frigiking setups than VWs, so I keep most everything to do it in stock. I use the same Chinese Sandens that Gilmore uses. At first I was totally resistant to this but John Kulak kept insisting they were just as good and I should try them, and that has proven to be very true over quite a few installs. They're efficient, quiet, and don't sap any noticeable power.

In fact, one of my big MB collector customers that I've built and installed several of these for lives in AZ during the winter and has a 1964 220SEb down there. He had me build a setup and send it down. His old classic Mustang mechanics that offered to work on the MB are wanting all my sources for this stuff now because they said it was a real easy install and they really like the compressor/ adapter plate and the condenser. I sent all the brackets, pulleys, belt, premade hoses, refurbed and refinished under dash unit, compressor, adapter, aux fan and bracket, wiring harness, and under dash "modesty" panels made to go round the A/C unit and blower.

I might be able to do something similar for you if push comes to shove as I will be making up a system for my '69 as well down the road apiece.

Everett, maybe it's time for an A/C install sticky.

Tram. Thanks again for the help. I will hang tight and give you the business. Thanks buddy!

I wasn't really soliciting business per se, but I'll be a resource if you need it. I am freaking buried, LOL.[/quote]

So my buddy found me this car on Craigslist in inland empire CA. I contacted the seller in January to look at it in person, so I loaded my small trailer and bombed out to buses by the bridge, contacted the seller again from there and they said the car sold. I could not believe it. It was my fault for not buying it from Atlanta when I saw the ad, but I wanted to put my eyes on the car first to insure it had one or some of the better original paint fenders or doors I could use for my build. I drove back to Atlanta empty and not happy. Two weeks after I was home, my buddy here texted me and said the fasty was relisted in CA. You have to be kidding me I thought. I contacted the seller once again and he told me the first buyer flaked out. I went down to his bank in the morning and deposited the money for the car. I am now on my way back with the car after a long haul moving other cars around the country just to get what turns out the front fenders and doors. Lol. Good enough for me! This color is so hard to find let alone original paint parts I feel it has been worth all the efforts and sore back!

Even though all Fastbacks are only good for parts for Squarebacks and Notchbacks... that one is too nice to break for spares.

Sorry.

Just bought another fastback that had a deep sea green rear fender and hood! It also has a black interior for this 69 and a clean original dash for my square. Going to save it as well if the bottoms are good or I will sell it outright once here in Atlanta.
