Stock only.
This is some of the long standing bitching and moaning of those who want the reliability of Jakes original "camper special" engine.....but think his answer/formula/recipe....was hideously overpriced. But its not.....unless you are judging it by your own labor charges.
His "combo" as he puts it...realizes that the weight, aerodynamics, gearing and tire size....of a bus......sucks....even for a type 4 engine. A stock type 4 or even a mild performance build....IN A TYPE 4 CAR.....has about 2 to 2.5x the reliability and most important...the "re-usability" of a type 4 engine and its parts.... in a bus.
Thats not the ugly part at all though. The ugly part is that when said engine in a bus wears out and gets torn down.....the vast majority of it is junk.... compared to the engine thats worn out and torn down in a type 4 vehicle.
Jake took all of this into consideration in his combo. Virtually every major component system needed to be upgraded. Ignition, displacement, cam, compression....and most especially cooling system and cooling system balance.
He did not try to change the bus....he upgraded the engine to work with all the negatives.
Outside of that level of effort......the bus is an engine killer. Yes....the type 4 does better in a bus than a type 1 for US driving. But it wears out quicker than the same engine (with better specs) in a type 4, type 3 or type 1 car.....and does case and head damage that is just not common in types 1, 2 , 3.
The range of mods that Jake Raby installed....rectify those problems. Ray |
