Looking to reset my non-trip speedometer in anticipation of a fresh motor build. Did some digging but couldn't find any answers on how to do this. Friends have done it with ease for trip speedos, but I can't seem to find any info on how to roll back the odometer on the non-trip version.
Any help is appreciated. _________________ '67 Squareback

It's the same procedure as the trip meter type . It's actually easier. Both of mine one is a spare have the trip meter. While you are in there it's best to remove the aluminum drive and stake or shrink it's bore so it's a tight fit .
I used to use a small punch yet got much better results using a small ball peen hammer . Just make certain the two pins cast to that drive are not on any surface then on both sides place the ball of the hammer on the bore and give it a few taps with another small hammer and you will see how the bore will now have a smaller ID . If you don't do that sooner or later the gear will slip and the odometer will not work . A small ball from a ball bearing will work too. |

Glad it worked . I never remove anything other than the lens , the two screws and pull it out and just remove the one large pin so I can get the aluminum gear out and the small pin to get the black gears out of the way. Usually just large pin is enough. |

This worked! Got the speedometer rolled back without having to remove the needle & face. |
Any one use this process on a 71 Sqr.? Are the speedo's the same? |

The same process . The one shown is a beetle type . You don't need to remove the needle . All you need to do is get the chrome crimped on ring off . I just bend a few of the crimps up enough to get the ring off , then you can remove the lens along with the painted rim . Once you have this off remove the 2 screws that hold the unit in the housing and be careful with the needle so you don't break it.
Then you will see a large pin with a groove that is the shaft the numbers rotate one and a smaller shaft that the small black gears.
If you just want to roll it back just drive out the small shaft just enough to move it away from the number wheels.
Most times however the aluminum drive gear next to the numbers is loose or becomes loose when that happens the odometer will stop working . If you remove the large shaft when you put it back in mind the small brass drive gear where it meshes with the white plastic worm gear . Line them up or you will screw up the white worm because you need to tap that shaft back in. and that shaft as I said needs to fit tight in the aluminum drive gear . I used a small C clamp on the small brass drive gear and a small socket on the other side since the shaft comes through a hole and sticks out a bit. Just don't force that shaft in to far . you need some free play between the small brass gear and the frame .
I did mine yet took no photo's to show how I did it. Just once you have the speedo out of the main cup/housing look at how the gears work to see the play needed before you do any thing.
I described how to fix that if you want . |
