I have several oil pressure questions. When my 77 2.0 bus engine is hot the oil light flickers if the idle speed is 1000rpms or lower. I've replaced the sending unit with a new one with no improvement
I went and bought an oil pressure test gauge and plugged it in where the oil pressure sender was mounted. When I crank the engine oil pressure goes up to 52lbs. Over the next 30 minutes with then engine idling the oil pressure drops down to 10 lbs. I shut the engine down but feel the pressure would drop lower if the engine got hotter.
-What should the oil pressure be? Do I need to replace the oil pump with an aftermarket higher output pump or new factory pump or is this normal. Could this be worn engine bearings? |

I’d ream the bypass galley and have an o/s plunger made after checking it for wear of course. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

what is the grade oil you are using?
Do you know if all your engine tin is in place, and the oil cooler flap working correctly? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin

That doesn't sound out of line for a warm type 4, VW even warns you in the owners manual that a flickering oil light when hot isn't freakout time. 10 lbs per 1000 rpm is the gold standard, original oil light switches turned on the light at 5-7 psi.
What weight of oil are you using?, what temperature is the oil when it's flickering? (meat thermometer down dipstick, laser thermometer. etc..), are all your engine seals and tin in place?, what are you setting your timing to? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'm using castroil 10-40 conventional oil. I do have an oil temp gauge installed. The light starts to flicker when oil temp is above 180 degrees.
-Yes all the engine tin is in place along with the cooling flaps
-I adjusted the timing to 7.5 degrees btdc with a timing light and the engine idling
-The oil pressure switch opens at 0.3 bar which is about 4.3 lbs. Can I set the idle speed up alittle to around 1000rpms. |
