Hey Guys,

I have a 1964 Notchback with a 1500 S engine. The distributor is the one year ZV/JCU4R3 with the hard to fine Bosch ZVS74Z6 Cap and a ZVVT5Z7 rotor.

The cap and rotor are in bad shape and need to be replaced. I sourced the cap via e-bay (NOS) but I can't find this rotor any place. By looking at ads for the distributor here on the samba, I have seen this rotor being used.

Rotor:

I am pretty sure I am good to go with this combo, but I wanted to poll the knowledge of this board before I get all excited about getting my notch up and running again. Thanks in advance for the help on this. Here are some photos of Luke..

Thanks Lucas! Much appreciated. The interchangeable part numbers mix things up for me. Is there a website that converts these part numbers? How did you know that the 04 006 is the same as 1234 332 082?

There is a Bosch short to long conversion site somewhere out there that I found a long time ago. I have been running the same distributor in my Notchback since I bought it in 2005 and have learned from necessity

Parts are out there for them and when I come across spares at good prices I grab them

I found this that I have printed for my Notch:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/Bosch_Tune_Up_Parts/Bosch_Tune_Up_Parts.pdf

Thank for the information. Now I have what I need.

I search eBay now and then for NOS and buy them if priced right. I have 3 distributor caps now...I think I will stop buying them for a while Smile

Thanks Brother and congrats on the Pats win if you are a fan....

The 082 rotor is a common part found on all type I, II, and III engines with the stock distributor from 1964 until 1968 and then again on type III in the mid 70's. The distributor cap from the same era can be used on this distributor, as well; all you have to do is file a small notch where the condenser wire attaches. The points and condenser are the same as those used on the 36 hp beetle but one should test fit the lead wire to insure that it will reach the coil on a type III.

The reality is that the only truly hard to find part for this distributor is the vacuum canister. I find them often enough on the 36 hp beetle cores which is an incorrect installation. The distributor gets pitched onto the pile because it won't run right with the 36 hp 28 PCI carburetor. Rolling Eyes the canisters are usually low hour units.

Bingo. Cool I've got the purchase price down on a couple of T3 dizzy purchases at swaps just because the seller, sees me hone in on that "odd" dizzy then ask how much. Nine times out of ten they are like - Ill sell it to you for the lower price if you tell me wtf its for?

The internet has made most of the "hard" to find stuff available for sure.

Great info! Much appreciated. I am thinking of going with a pertonix electronic ignition (ignitor II). Have you guys tried this out?

Cheers,

Phil

Have you found any Pertronix that fit the 1964 1500S distributor? I have looked but never found anything.

Maybe a 36 HP Ignitor fits?

According to the pertronix website, the 92843 ignitor II fits this dizzy.

It would be the same kit as the 36 hp beetle which is different than the 019, 010 units.

I've seen the "special" cap go for over $100 when all you have to do is file a notch for your notch into a $10 cap and you are good to go.

The ZV/JCU4R3 uses the same Pertronix at the VJU4BR8. Both are vacuum/mechanical where the breaker plate it mounts to, moves. The 010 and 019 use the 1844 and the breaker plate is rigidly mounted to the body and doesn't move.

OK..I ordered the correct Pertronix Kit then. I did run into a minor issue that is fixed with a little grinding.

I pulled the rotor off and slid the pertronix supplied magnet around the point cam. I tried to get the magnet flush to the bottom of the breaker plate but the bracket for the vacuum is in the way. Pertronix instructions point to grinding the bracket down a bit in order for the magnet to slide all the way down. See below:

Resurrecting this one..

How did the electronic ignition work for the ZV/JCU 4R3?

I've tinkered with the idea of going electronic ignition with my car since I'm driving it daily and plenty long distance drives. I am running the 4R3 as well and happy with the performance. The points have served me well for the last 3 years, just wanna hear a bit more about this EI kit and how it worked for anyone who has used it.

It's just a Pertronix and will work like all the others.

And suddenly fail like the others, so be prepared if it happens.

Here's a topic dedicated to points or Pertronix.
