through the dash tray
through the kick panel
down, near the front nose
through a hole (look underneath)
I don't remember the route underneath but it's not complicate.
good luck! _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

There should be "clips" along the bottom of the driver's side main chassis frame. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Two clips I believe to the left and above the horn with feet at passenger side and head on drivers side. |

how do you route the cable after it exits the second clip? I removed the old one and failed to take note of that detail and now notice that the newly installed cable ends up touching the brake line (just barely, but still making contact) when the wheel is turned all the way to the right (I think...it might be during a left turn, however)
is this normal? I have it zip tied now to prevent contact and would prefer to eliminate and contact the correct way, if there is one...

Over the top beam cross-tube and curved into the brake drum.
My '61 Double Cab
My '63 15-Window
You can see the 2 clips here
Ignore front sway bar if that is confusing - it is from a later Bus
My '63 looks closer to the brake line but I don't think it's an issue.
Note: My '63 is the '63 1-ton model so it has 64-67 style brakes. _________________ How to Post Photos

Make sure the rubber grommet/seal is in the spindle and the speedo cable goes through it. Without it water splashed by the opposite wheel gets shot into the bearings inside he drum.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I wanted to add a little to this since I used it as reference for my cable. I found that the amount of slack you leave up by the spindle is critical.
The most obvious is if you leave too little, the housing can kink at the spindle or just make it harder to make a right turn.
But on mine I found that I had pulled a bit too much to the spindle and the cable would ride over the dampener mount in a hard left turn. Then was snagging on the dampener mount during a left turn, like this:
You can see the start of damage to the sheath
What I found is that a bit less and it'll stay tucked on the outside of the mount, even in a hard left (I'm not sure why they didn't add one more clip for this...)
And should make a nice gentle curve to the front when your wheels are straight.
And when you think you've gotten it right, do a couple of hard turns left and right to make sure it's not snagging, pulling or kinking... |
