Yesterday was the official day, dad and I recovered, rescued, and loaded up a Single treasure chest 59 Single Cab. Hidden behind muck, vines, and busted up bays, laid this little gleam of adventure.
Here is pop cutting roots to free it up:
With the limited space, and resources, we spent 2 hours laying boards down, using a floor jack and pushing, lower jack and repeat method, to eventually get enough room to bring in the truck and a chain, to tug and drag it through the lot to the trailer. All four tires were rotten, and with the rear left wheel locked up, it was an eventful day.
It's previous resting place since 91.
I purchased this truck from a genuine guy, Bob Myers, for those outside of Little Rock or better our little VW community of Arkansas, Bob has been saving and putting life back into Volkswagens since the mid-80's at the shop seen in the photos. Years before that too, on the east coast before finding home here in the south. I am privileged to be able to do business and have even the opportunity to take on this task simply because he saw value years ago, back when singles and doubles were not "valued".
Bob rescued this pickup back in 90 off the river banks of the Arkansas, with record highs and massive flooding that spring, it was nearly lost and swept away.
If you are ever in the area, need some guru knowledge, or are simply looking for parts, leads, or ideas, he's the man. Kudos to the heart of the VW community, he is definitely certified and be so now acknowledged.
Here you can see the wonderful joy of a locked wheel:
Finally getting it up on the trailer, I purchased some 14" Thing wheels on some nice tread to make moving much easier. Perhaps one day I'll sell these to someone appropriate and land some true bus wheels.
The epic sunset trailer shot:
A sweet photo dad caught last night with it finally in the garage at the house
Some rusty pics of my new treasure.
I look forward to learning a lot, sharing my journey, and all the insight our wonderful community has to share, and all the awesomeness and frustration that comes along with old VW adventures. I am so very proud and pleased to now own a true classic.
What would we do without our wonderful dads?! I'm a lucky guy, I guess it helps I'm the family VW mechanic and he owed me one _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Nice looking truck. Single cabs are awesome! Somebody wanted those safaris pretty bad, but it looks like they didnt destroy more than necessary to get them out.
Reminds me of digging out buses w/my dad. Fun times, except for the mud, the bugs and the stuck wheels!
Looking forward to seeing your progress. |

Finally Finally Finally!
I was beginning to think this thing was going to be named John Henry with all the hammering taking place!
Complete rot of the wheel cylinder, the rubber had simply became little lumps of goop, and the shoes had buried themselves into the cylinder with the drum actually rusting to the dust plate and shoes, this one took me 8 hours.
Rubber arms for a couple of days, at least I know have a roller.
Degreaser and pressure washer coming soon, this old thing needs a bath, let's just hope it stays together!
The carnage:

Lots easier to pop the shoes loose, with hammer and long punch thru lug bolt holes. That way you are directly shocking the each shoe. Hammering on the drum just does not work as well.
Once you have the drum rotating you can use the same hammer and punch to vibrate the brake star adjusting bolt against the side of the head. That should get the adjusting stars moving so you can get the shoes backed off from the drums. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I definitely see more blue. As far as condition, it's crusty but worth fixing for sure. It kind of reminds me Mustie1's single. He has a nice playlist on YouTube for it. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

When the front floor is that rusty just makes it easy to remove. Rockers look better than "Funky". Change the oil and gap the valves. Ready to go. Beautiful!
One regret I have is not taking enough photos of pre existing conditions. Digital photos are free. Take a ton of well lit detailed shots of everything.
Great start video. Your year does not have a spare tire hanger in the TC. Stock spare tire was skinny enough to fit behind the seat. I added the tire hanger in Funky.
Easy to get overwhelmed. This will take some time. Focus on a few tasks at a time.
If you tell us what you are going to do next we can overwhelm you with advice.

Looks better than I thought it would when I saw your first pictures. Is there anything left of the underside though? The underside is the hardest part to work on.
Good luck with your project, it'll take time (lots of it) but will be rewarding in the end. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Right on... that left side rocker looks amazing. Great to have another single cab thread- this will motivate me to climb back into my treasure chest.
FYI- I've found no treasure thus far _________________ "If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do." -Warren Miller |
