Also another topic, with the installation of a dual port engine in, air cleaner becomes a large question. Do 36hp and 40HP bus air cleaners fit the different setups, I.e. a PICT-34 carb with given clearance overhead of the bed metal? |
Earlier air cleaners will fit fine on later stock carbs, but you will need to make a small adapter bracket due to the air cleaner will be more left of the triangle bracket bolted to the fan shroud. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Actually that would have been stock for 1961 thru end of 1963. It will allow you to have anti carb icing set up. While you can get better breathing air cleaners, even stock ones, the 40 HP will work fine. Have one on our 1641cc SP engine with now over 150,000 miles, but both of us are not the floor it and ignore it, or drag racing kind of drivers. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available!

Good Deal! I find it hard for a supplier of quality items to hack and half-ass a product when they used to supply Wiring Works items.
I was curious if I was foolish to be keeping the stock, screw-in terminal style wiring, though if I happen to indeed be a fool, good to know I'm not the only one

Don't blame me for encouraging you. Yes you are a fool. Welcome to the club. Wiring works did not supply the correct harness without spade lugs for '59. WW wires are tinned on the ends which is fine but microscopic brass tubing was how it was done in '59 to keep stranded wire from fraying under the screw terminals. Screw terminal parts are more expensive and usually in poor condition. You have your work cut out keeping it stock '59. Install the parking lamps very carefully. They are not fused and will melt your new harness. The key to trouble free wiring is good connections everywhere. Clean those screw terminals in and out. Clean and solder those eyelets and rivets inside all your 60 year old switches and fuse block. Use a dab of dielectric grease on all connections to keep them from oxidizing now that they are clean. Add grounding wires and screws to the body on components that depend on pressure from mounting for electrical path. Wiring is where good workmanship really counts. The more time you spend on the details the more reliable it will be.

I had a complete lefty laying around and totally forgot to offer it to you. Glad you found one though.

Actually have the bracket needed already on the doghouse.
Do the older air filters not restrict breath-ability with larger horsepower motors? |

Happy Day! Sheet metal has arrived!
One minor fold up on the passenger tab of the floor pan, but no trouble straightening out. Not bad for just some cardboard bouncing 2400 miles, in two days, believe that!
Without much time, and following/taking notes on 1-3 of Kurt's dogleg repair, I began this evening working on the outer driver dogleg. Not quite as extensive as replacing the full dogleg sections, but getting straight and tight no different. With about 4 hours, working cautiously, I have about a 1/4 of the outer leg welded in. Oh, this is fun stuff
Check out that gap, almost as sexy as the infamous thigh gap! I'm pleased with the lines, and I followed tips from Kurt with blocks/shims getting some kinks worked out with the door alignment.
Door is a little toasty on the end, but will serve its purpose. It's fairly solid.
One question I do have, with the separation of the inner and outer legs, what is the alignment with the bumper bracket coming through the outer dogleg? Does this variate from Bus to bus, reasoning it's so "slotted" to begin with?
I have both the inner and outer doglegs lining up very well, but am seeking some clarification before I make things permanent. With no bumper, I wish it were simpler, it also helps when you begin to get the hang of the torch. Perhaps I just had a decent evening of welding, let's hope I'm still going uphill! _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Don't worry about the bumper bracket yet. Don't weld the bracket to the outer dogleg yet. When you have both doglegs complete fit YOUR bumper and adjust the bumper brackets as needed. Then weld up the gap at the top of the bracket to the outer dogleg hole.
Two things to be aware of with the floor you have. The steering box hole is a slot for a plate and screw for the earlier year. You have three or more options. Do nothing and let the floor matt cover the hole. Weld up the hole and cut a new round one. Like I did. Get the plate from an earlier bus floor to go around the steering column.
Put some clay under your door to make sure the door bottom has adequate clearance so it will not scrape later in it's life.
The "funky green" is just a protective coating for distribution that I would remove and replace with proper metal prep and high quality primer inside and out. It washes off easily with lacquer thinner and steel wool. I have seen green paint rub off leaving bare metal in the shape of an oily hand print!
You will need an accelerator pedal hinge and make some brackets to hold felt squares under the pedals. Or not.
You are gone. There will be no recovery for you.

That floor is '55-'58. Gerson has the proper '59 floor for your truck. Small hole for the column and rearward shifter/park brake. It's a one year only floor. Call/email him and he'll take care of you. |

You'll do good to contact him about that floor. I went through the same dilemma. Here's mine.
Hope this helps. |

Well I've been emailing Gerson a handful of times now, with quick responses that they offer the one year only pan, but as soon as I mentioned what I needed to do to send back/ship to a vendor to get the correct pan, communication has been halted.
I know it's a huge inconvenience, since my money has already been received for what I ordered. But according to the website, I thought I ordered the correct one, why would they offer something and not have it listed for the public to see availability and pricing?
Anyone have any ideas what's best here? I'm one dogleg in, one more done on the passenger side and its pan time, I'd like to get things moving.
Thanks gents, _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Sambosamba22,
I would bet that Gerson will take care of you. I believe that he handles most of the Klassicfab business himself and it takes much of his time. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he already shipped you the correct floor. Be patient for a little while longer if possible. |

With time off it means hands on!
Here is a video sharing the progress being made on the Single. Rain, crappy lighting, and shakier hands from a sore back moving a VW motor (when will I learn?) please tune in, and share the journey thus far.
FWIW, still waiting on hearing from Gerson, hoping to be surprised with an email before much longer.
But you, you hard working dedicated and passionate V-Dub nut, still back, lie to the lady and say you're watching that video of how to fix the dishwasher and delight yourself to another bus being saved.
And as always, share some feedback, yay or nay, I appreciate all that is from our community.
Happy weekend folks, safe show going and cruising, it is summer!
